The downside to CC/ open cary on planes is just too big, IMO. What about the confined and crowded spaces? What about a single shot causing depressurization? What about just plain-old human error? Alcohol served on board doesn't mix well with guns either. It's just not worth it. The problem is you're assuming terrorists and other crazies are rational thinkers. They don't give a shit if anyone shoots back at them as long as they cause chaos, death, and fear. Having multiple untrained people with weapons on board a passenger plane could very well assist them in achieving there goal as much as it could prevent it. And allowing just anyone to walk onto a plane with a deadly weapon might just facilitate terror rather than deter it. I prefer to leave airline security to highly trained Air Marshals.

This is not a trample on the civilians rights, it's simple logistics; you have an active shooter who's a civ or "contractor"...most likely he's in plain clothes...

Tell that to everyone on Ft. Hood. I'm pretty sure the shooter there was a Major (an officer with a security clearance) wearing a military uniform. The casualties weren't just service members, there were civilians that were shot and killed too. Some of the civilians that were shot and killed were killed because of their heroic actions to try and take down the shooter. If they were allowed to be armed they may still be alive today.

I agree with this one. I wouldn't want a stray bullet to put a hole in the side of the plane and possible cause the situation to be fatal to everyone.

I think that any passenger who wishes to bring a weapon on board needs to check it into a safe with a security guard at the terminal BEFORE they get on board the airplane. That safe will then be moved onto the airplane and passengers can get their firearm when they arrive at their destination.

Not saying it would solve everything...or ANYthing for that matter...I know the Ft Hood shooter was a serviceman...I just don't think civilians should be armed in places that should be secure, where there are armed people paid to take out lunatics. To achieve that we need places like military bases and schools and such to be ACTUALLY secure and we need to arm the people running the bases and schools, not any random who happens to be working there for the week
