'14 in the sand

Hi everybody. New to me 4Runner on the beach and dunes. I had a lifted 06 trd Tacoma before this. Bought new was bulletproof, prior to that a T100 xcab 4x4 same treatment as the taco. My wife had #3 a month ago so I needed a bigger truck. I have an '84 gmc 3500 for my hauling dutys so the only option was a 4Runner. I've always wanted one and the gen 5 is the nicest looking truck on the road. Performed awesome in the dunes. It's going to get the trd pro wheels, small lift and tires. I still need to research what will fit

Chappy?

congrats!

I was going to guess that or somewhere on the Cape Nat'l Seashore.

I drive out on Sandy Neck in Barnstable, and Crowes Pasture and Chapin Beach in Dennis, (though Chapin is rarely open to ORV anymore and only during low tides). I've never driven out on Chappy, nor Nauset. I did the outer beach in P-town years ago in my old '98 Blazer but I wasn't paying attention to the tides, which happened to be extremely high that day, and I almost lost my truck to the great Atlantic!

Question for you OP, when driving through loose sand in the 5th Gen, do you use 4H or 4L? I bought my '11 SR5 about 4 months ago but haven't taken it off-roading yet. I kept my '01 as a backup vehicle and use that for ORV'ing, kayak-carrying, fishing/ hunting and other dirty jobs. When driving out on the sand I would use the 4x4 system in center diff locked mode, but I know the newer TR4's are different. Eventually I'll have to get rid of the '01 and only then will I start taking the '11 offroad. Just wondering what mode is best for what situations. The owners manual isn't very clear about it.

no sand you shouldn't be able to tackle aired down in 4H.

That's what I figured. Most of the time I can do just fine with the '01 without the center diff locked. I just do it out of habit because some of the spots out on those beaches are much more soft/loose than the main trails that are packed down from all the trucks driving out. I generally air them down to 12 - 15psi.

FWIW, I tend to prefer 4lo for most off road including sand. The reason isn't so much the gearing, but the other stuff. For me, the rear locking diff is a big one. But also shift logic changes in 4lo. It'll keep a higher gear and give you a lot better throttle response in low range. If I'm just cruising easy packed trails, no reason for low range. But if it's softer sand like out in the sand dunes, even for the 30-40mph stuff I like to stick with 4lo for the shift point changes.

The beach is race point in Provincetown MA. Myself, dad, 2 cousins and uncle have been striper/blue fishing the beach since '85 when I was 4. Back then my dad had a 2dr hardbody pathfinder before they made them into cars. Anyway there are some good trails there thru the dunes and plenty of tough spots on the shore. I ran the taco in 4lo quite a bit. This new truck I used in high and manual shifted it. I did this in the real soft rutty sand. I also just let go in drive and had no issues. I did put it in 4lo to try it and the atrac but to be honest I couldn't get it to a real challenge. Tires set to 15pounds, most go lower but I never had a problem.
My parents have a place in sandwitch ma so we go on sandy neck too, not in this truck yet. And def spent a lot of time on the flats at chapins and sandy neck. I have "Hamburger" cooler rack that went on the '86 Nissan I'm gonna fab the mounts to fit in a receiver instead of the 2 2" tubes.

Cool. I live in Sandwich and go out on Sandy Neck frequently. I still go out on Crowes occasionally.
