Whats done is finally done!!!

Okay... so heres the update.

I made the claim with my insurance. They wrote a check to my body shop for $2500 that is minus the deductible. Everything went stellar on the repairs.. far less damages than estimated by the adjuster.. The shop ended up letting me purchase my own rack and told me to pay them at the end of the job.

SUNROOF NO LONGER LEAKS
DENTS ARE POPPED AND GONE
HEADLINER CLEANED AND NOT STAINED
TOTAL REPAIR COST: $475

That leaves me $2000 of MOD MONEY! The body shop said "they" have stuff turn out good sometimes but not usually this good! I am very fortunate!

NEXT: I took my roof rack off and managed to straighten it back out 98% heck the front supports even sat right back down to the original foot print!! So now all that needs done is to have it powdercoated and i got a quote locally for $100..

That now leaves me $1900 of mod & gas money!

So what started out a a terrible lesson learned and a complete NIGHTMARE.. Tuned into a valuable lesson and a THE RETROFIT SOURCE FX-R KIT!!!

Hand wash or nothing.... had an automatic wash damage my mercedes last year. Wipers ripped off a washer blade and then the air dryer blew off my locking gas door. Totally their fault and they tried to deny it even happened in their facility, kept saying my car was junk lol. Once I contacted mercedes and they called to explain to them how unjunky my car was and that it was the machines fault it was all taken care of.

I know its not exactly like your situation but those auto washes are trouble and they will always deny its their fault regardless of proof.... Hand Wash.

Some of us don't have that option. Not when it's -30* and blowing snow.

I've had trouble twice, both with SUVs (Jeep GC and LR3). My trucks hopped the rail and was push into a piece of equipment causing minor damage. PITA.

Even in the winter I'll pressure wash and then park it in the garage to let all the ice melt off lol. Literally hand wash in -30... hell no.

hehe, if your fairly well off up here, you have heated and drained garage with a separate wash rack.

otherwise, sane people don't wash during the winters up here since all that does it freeze your locks. or you buy a beater and keep the nice one in the garage during the winter.

and yes they do sell door lock antifreeze/thawing liquid up here.

That sucks..like others have said I'll never take my car through a car wash.. only touchless to get the salt off the car in the winter.

At my work/dealership I took a near brand new Nissan Titan through the car wash and it ripped one of the wiper blade arms right off the truck and marked the windshield up with a loose arm banging around (luckily it didn't do more damage as the arm was flying around in the washing machine type rollers..). That was real fun explaining that one to the boss..

So yeah I even get free washes at work and I still won't do it after seeing that. To the original poster good luck with your 4 runner that really sucks!

Since putting on my rack I hand wash, but in the winter sometimesI need to get salt off. There is a touch less wash near my house, total waste of money for most cars as it doesn't get them clean (the wife's black car for example) with just water pressure, perfect for my truck as nothing ever touches it but water so it at least gets a few layers of dirt and salt off.

Could have been worse, glad it was mostly just time, energy, and stress dealing with it.

Random question but does your powdercoat quote include stripping the rack and painting or just touch up work?

Random question but does your powdercoat quote include stripping the rack and painting or just touch up work?

It is local so it is drop off an pick up .. and it is a full sandblast.. rustproof polyprimer & semi-gloss powder coat.

I choose semi-gloss top hold up better in the texas sunshine

Sorry to hear this happened OP...that's why I only spray everything off with the pressure wand. Lesson learned.

Regarding the rack I would have it cut and splices welded on...wouldn't want to trust just bending it back. It won't look any worse, and you'll have the peace of mind there's no weak spots.

That is super harsh, but I'd have to agree with most. If you care about your car, do not take it to a car wash. At best use the pull-in bay style where you get out and manually spray the hose to get off dirt//mud.

I have a GObi ladder in the rear, and could easily see how spinning brushes could snag some part of it.

Old post but reading this really made my blood boil. So the OP goes mudding then decides to go through a car wash without the courtesy of taking off most of the mud at home or even at a self serve pressure wash before going into a drive through car wash so all the dirt and mud goes onto the brushes then scratches up all the cars behind him. And makes the carwash attendant's job that much harder when they have to clean up all the excess mud. Then ignores all the signs and also common sense about having racks and accessories while going through a carwash with spinning brushes. Gets his truck damaged, tries to blame the carwash, files a claim then profits handsomely off his insurance and brags about it on a public forum?

This is why I got a 4Runner so I can go down some trail and be away from people.

I have always used the self serve, and especially now that I added a CD antenna.
Besides, the soapy water gun is kinda fun!
And I can concentrate on the dirtiest parts of the truck.

And title says 4000 in damages/repairs, but didn't OP just tell us how he got it done for like $500 and kept $2000 from the insurance? That makes no sense.

yeah I don't even trust touchless car washes. I still ended up with scratches from one on the 12 Tacoma with only factory oem equipment installed by the port.

How could you end up with scratches from a touchless car wash? Are you confusing "brushless" with "touchless"? Nothing but water and soap touches your vehicle in a touchless carwash. It's sort of like a dishwasher for cars.
