To set the record straight ...

Not what I'm saying at all. What I'm saying is that WHEN good parenting isn't effective their needs to be a "Plan B" to prevent a teen from ruining their future.

Sex talk and thai? im out this *****..........

Does it scare you? You know what else? Condoms have not made a dent because it has its limitations, as discussed above. Plan B won't have any of that. That is just the truth whether you find my discussion yucky or not.

BTW, it isn't that easy to get a girl pregnant...despite the rampant teen pregos. Her cycle has to be perfect for those "spilled beans" to make contact successfully...a few days of the cyle only. So, in essence, Plan B (levonorgestrel) will be used a lot of times for nothing. What I wrote above may scare some folks, but what I wrote will be true...Plan B will be used excessively (more so than anticpated). Cost of Plan B is around $30-60.

In Brian's words, to set the record straight....

The clinical trials are few...and the numbers of participants were limited. BUT, compared to normal (or underweight) women, obese women (BMI>30) who took Plan B were at 4x higher risk of pregnancy. Overweight women (BMW 25-29) rate was 2x. So, in fact, for these overweight women, Plan B did not reduce pregnancy rate much (if at all).

In women using emergency contraception, there was a 4x increased risk of pregnancy associated with unprotected sex during the period of highest probability of conception (intercourse on the day before ovulation when conception is 30%) compared with intercourse when the risk of conception was zero.

Further acts of unprotected sex AFTER using Plan B (and other like products) was associated with a 4x increase in pregnancy compared to women who did not have sex after the pill.

Observational limited studies have concluded that easier access to emergency contraception led to higher utilization, BUT it did not result in a significant drop in pregnancy rate of the population.

These limited studies showed no harm in using Plan B on a limited basis.

Significant immediate side effects include irregular vaginal bleeding in the month after treatment...16% of patients in the first week after use.

You can take Plan B up to 120 hours from sex, but effectiveness decrease significantly after 24-72 hours.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These are the medical info available in summary. Note that these are all small limited studies. This is not what you get when a major antibiotic is being tested. My guess is that Plan B was pushed thru the FDA testing protocol to be released to the public.

PS: It ain't 100% effective even when taken...sorry JD.

PS#2: Get to know how to calculate BMI (body mass index)...and then calculate it BEFORE having sex with your classmates...it would also be wise to ask her when was her last period. That will surely put both of you in the mood! :D (I sound like Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory.)

Hey Thai, would you be so kind as to cite those sources for me. I would like to read the same primary sources you did.
Thanks in advance.

bummer. no subscription. I could probably get them through school though.

Here you go. You owe me! :D

Sources from what I wrote above:

1. "Can we identify women at risk of pregnancy despite using emergency contraception?"

Contraception. 2011; 84(4):363

2. "Population effect of increased access to emergency contraceptive pills: a systemic review."

3. "Advance provision of emergency contraception for pregnancy prevention (full review)."

Thanks for the sources Thai. I'm coming to the realization that I don't currently have the time to join in on any meaningful and well researched discussions on this topic.

Perhaps after I finish up my finals I can return to this discussion.

I said ....
To set the record straight ...
1. the government is not giving Plan B to anyone, a person must buy it from a store
2. the ruling makes over the counter sales possible for minors - that is all
3. as a parent YOU can teach your kids whatever you want and YOU can teach them not to buy it
4. it is just like the condom argument of the past because back then people often for religious reasons tried to legislate against over the counter access to condoms.

------------

Thai you simply quote sources without a point. It is talk without a thesis.

None of the data you posted as a response has anything to do with the discussion which was "should the government BLOCK the sale of Plan B to minors"

Even if Plan-B worked slightly less effectively in overweight women that doesn't have anything to do with the argument "should this be allowed to be purchased over the counter". Despite the wiki sources you quoted there are lots of studies out there and Plan B has been around for many years now.

You are trying to highlight loose medical arguments against the product because you are unwilling to say that you believe it should be banned and that it makes kids more likely to have sex. Those are your beliefs correct?

You never addressed any of the points myself or others made, instead you just responded to different arguments.

You say "the government is handing it out to children" I pointed out that is false SO you just replied by making up a new line of argument.

:plane:

I say it again - stop worrying about controlling other peoples kids and worry about your own. If other peoples kids have access that does not affect your kids ESPECIALLY SINCE you say parenting is what matters. So then teach your kids not to buy or use the product.

Brian, those sources are from medical journals...not wiki...read up on UPTODATE.COM. I am a physician...uptodate is the source aggregate...very AUTHORITATIVE. It ain't Wikipedia dude. You're barking up the wrong tree. And yeah, UPTODATE considers ALL legit sources and comes to a conclusion...at the same time, they also talk about the important studies that are relevant. In other words, if you are not in the medical field, Brian...I would suggest you keep quiet, esp. when criticizing where I get my info from. That is just dumb.

Are you seriously mental?! How do you come to these conclusion of me misstating anything?! Of course, the government is not "handing" out these drugs for free. The fact that you READ into that is stupendously *******. (*** was done by me.) NO ONE else is interpreting that from my statement. Stop with that nonsense. Geez. Stupid. It is like you stick onto that and miss the bigger point. Good job Brian.

The PROBLEM here is that Plan B to minors create a bad culture. Why you have not caught on to my central idea by now is beyond me. It ain't that hard. And like those above, the problem is that we don't live in a cocoon...we must interact with others...we have peer pressure. The culture that Plan B and other liberal acts screws up traditional parent-child interaction because it creates a culture of irresponsibility that my kids have to deal with daily. Get it?

BTW, read my source post again...read it real good to see why I posted it. Geez, I thought my bolding of important statements would help. I stand corrected Brian. You're special.

BTW #2, Brian, my post was NOT solely directed at you.

I applaud in actually using resources that are credible and not going by what the mainstream media tells him. It has been known for decades the side effects of plan B and birth control. Why do you think there are so many more mutated genes/deformities/problems in new babies. Why do you think we have an over 50% increase in breast cancer. The answer for the Komen foundation would be to not put these hormonal and genetic trait changing artificially manufactured pills in your body. The biggest irony in todays world is the majority of people trying to eat and live healthy and eat "organic" but then take the pill(most unorganic item")which completely messes up your internals. Again as stated until there is an agreement on what sex is for this thread will not progress as many people as stated earlier are just voicing opinions and not bringing concrete data to the table. Thai again respect to you for trying to talk with these people who for being ones that say keep an open mind are some of the most close minded people. Opinions are NOT facts people. Cheers

Teen pregnancy in the city has plunged by 27% over the last decade, new data show.

The dip comes as the number of teens having sex has fallen, while the proportion using birth control has gone up, according to numbers to be released by the city Health Department Sunday.

“Two things are happening here — teens are using more contraceptives, and they’re also delaying sexual activity,” said Health Commissioner Tom Farley.

The city has worked to make it easier for kids to get birth control — giving out condoms at schools and making birth control and the morning-after pill available in some school clinics, a sometimes controversial move.

Farley said the numbers show that strategy is working.

“It shows that when you make condoms and contraception available to teens, they don’t increase their likelihood of being sexually active. But they get the message that sex is risky,” he said.

For every 1,000 girls between the ages of 15 and 19, 72.6 got pregnant in 2010 — down from 98.8 in 2001. The rate was 43.1 for girls 15 to 17 and 114.5 for 18- and 19-year-olds.

There are about 19,080 teen pregnancies a year in the city — down from 24,815 in 2001.

Sexual activity has also dropped by 26% — from 50.9% to 37.8% of public high school students.

The part about teens not being aware of the availability of birth control? Why not just tell us what you mean?

I just find it fascinating that you left out the rest of the article. Hmmm.

Remember, up to now, Plan B is available BEHIND the counter AND requires driver's license to purchase...like if you were to buy Claritin-D. So, really, none of these surveys take into account the new over-the-counter status of Plan B.
