17 inch skinny tires question

I have the 3 inch OME lift and I recently switched from 255 / 75 / 17 to 285 / 75 / 16 and I am extremely pleased. The skinny tires, in my opinion, don't fill out the 4R when you look at it from the front or back. I went with General Grabber AT2's and even though they are heavier than my 43 lb Firestone AT's, I haven't noticed a big drop in MPG. A slight drop is expected but definitely worth it. Go with a 285 tire - 285 / 70 / 17 or 285 / 75 / 16

Yeah just like the OP said though I like my fj wheels and don't want to drop to 16s. So your mileage did drop when you went to the 285s though as compared to the 255s

I am considering this setup right now and I have a few questions if you dont mind. What engine do you have 6 or 8? What front spring did you go with. And finally what rubbing do you have with the 285 if any? Thanks.

Yeah, but that is a 5th gen... does anyone know if there is more room for larger spare with a 5th gen? I have a 4th gen V8 with the large trailer hitch and was just able to squeeze a 255/75/17 BFG MT but it is very, tight fit. I really don't think a 255/80/17 new ST Maxx would fit in a 4th gen with stock hitch.

I have a 4th generation V8 and with the hitch it will not fit.

Yeah, I hear you on the 255s not filling out the 4R when looking from the front or back...at least with stock wheels or similar backspacing. I had second thoughts about my skinny tires until I went with aftermarket wheels with less backspace. I am happy with the look now, but one should consider how much they like the wide tire look when deciding 255 vs 285.

I am running spidertrax 1.25" spacers all around, have been for 50k miles. I hear you guys loud and clear, that the skinnies will not look great from front or rear. In fact, my friend who has a 5th gen limited has 245s on his car (size they come with from factory, on the 20" rims) and I always make fun of his "pizza cutters"

I do however, want to go taller, and want to stay light (already carrying ~600 lbs of extra gear compared to a stock truck), and recoup at least 1 MPG. With all the crap I am carrying now, I am averaging 16 mpg.

The other option I have been pondering is picking up a set of 5th gen limited wheels (20") and getting 275x65x20 duratracs. That is a good 34 inches. Anyone know if a 3" suspension lift and 1.5" body lift is good for 34" tires?

Hey man - I have a V6 - front spring is 885 (with the top spacer).

I do not have any rubbing at all but let me say that my first lift was a daystar 2.5 / 1.5 and I did remove the mud flaps and pushed the front fender liner forwards. These are minor modifications and take about 15 minutes.

I also think I don't have rubbing because I have a V6 and opted to go with a heavier spring (opposed to 884) with the top spacer from Toytec.

I am extremely pleased with the look. Once I update my build thread, I'll let you know.

Yes, consider long and hard. (I am currently trying to sell my 255's  )

Does anyone know / think the K02 34x10.5 (which is actually 33.5x10.5) would fit with a std. 3/2" lift (no body lift). It would be snug, but with the skinny wheels I'm hoping its an option.

Body mount chop and plenty of trimming is assumed. Especially once spacers are added..

For street driving you should be ok with minimal trimming. Once you flex offroad, they will rub at the top of the front fender well and in the rear fender well. That has been my experience so far with my 255/80's which are just a hair smaller. Also, I'm not sure if a 34/10.50 would fit in the spare tire location. I had to cut a bracket off and hoist the 255/80 in flat then inflate it. It was a super tight squeeze and there is only about 1/4" between the spare and the panhard bar.

I would be curious to know if anyone has gone from a wide tire to a narrow tire (or vice versa) and noticed a significant difference in fuel economy.

My move from a 265/75R16 (31.6" diameter x 10.43" wide) to a 275/70R17 (32.2" diameter x 10.83" diameter) dropped my mileage more than my supercharger and lift, combined. That surprised me a bit since this was not a huge step up in size.

Both the old tire and the new one weigh 50 lbs even, both are ATs.

Great question. I've been pondering this same thing for my next set of tires. I'm really interested in these new 34's, but have no interest in playing the body lift game.

Only difference would be the rim right?
when I got my Duratracs they accidently installed E's instead of C's. That first week I was very unhappy with my acceleration, power and mileage. If I remember correctly there was a 6 pound difference, and really, it made a big difference I was surprised. Expedition portal has a good article about this skinny tire debate, I would link it for you if I can find it again.

Looking into it more, the KM2 255/80r17 are actually 10x33.2" and have been fitted on a few builds without a body lift I believe. So the 10.5x34 are only .3" taller, and .5" wider...

I'm currently running the 255/80r17 km2 on sequoia wheels. Previously had the 255/85r16 toyo mt on sr5 wheels. As for lift, 5100s on the highest setting (2.5" I believe), with 1.5" coil spacers in the rear.

Didn't have much issues fitting the toyo's on the stock offset wheels, but when I switched to the sequoia wheels with 15mm less offset, I had to remove the front flaps and pull the fender liners forward.

Also have 265/75r16 studded winters. I do notice a power & mpg difference when I put the summer tires on.

I'd appreciate some assistance on choosing a size for some new KO2s. A lot of the existing information I've researched is for 17" wheels but my limited has 18" wheels. I don't know how to adapt the existing information to my situation.

My stock tire is 265/60/18. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a Toytec 3/2 Bilstein 5100 all around lift and a 1" body lift. I'd like to get some larger tires to go with the lift but am unclear what size I can get. I'm prepared to move the fender liners as needed or do some very mild trimming of the fenders but not much more.

I don't know if I should do 265, 275 or 285; 60, 65, 70 or 75. My application is daily driver street use with weekend mild to moderate trails.

Try searching around the site. There are a lot of guys with those wheels and suspension setup.

Edit: this will help with comparing to 17" https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc

Well, that's encouraging. If true, I've got to imagine that a little extra trimming and maybe some taller bump stops would get you there. If you go for it, please post your results - I'd love to see it.

I just installed BFG KM2 255/80/17 . I have an OME 885 upfront and 895?? in the rear, anyhow what ARB OME used to call medium.

Mounted on FJ Cruiser wheels, no body lift, no body mount chop. Already removed mud flaps and trimmed and pulled back the inner fender liner because of previous sets of 33/12.5/17 and 285/70/17.

Minimal rubbing, but I had rubbing before with the 285s I just took off. Took it offroad this weekend and the rubbing seems to be from coming down hill while turning. Same issue when I come into an underground parking lot. I might need to trim off a small piece of the bumper that curves in toward the fender liner. I will try to spray plasti-dip in my inner fender plastic, body mount, inner bumper corner, then drive around climb some sidewalks....and see what areas rub off to see what needs trimming.

Unlike my wider tires, the skinnish 255 don't get sucked into the depressions of the road, and I had a much easier time climbing out of muddy ruts this past weekend, where the wider tires would cork screw forward and not climb.

When going to the skinnier pizza cutter tires what effect has been to the road manners of the tire? Comfort? Handling? Are they squirrely on the highway at all?

I ran 255/75/17 for 1 1/2 years and am now on 255/80/17. On road manners are fine. Squirreliness is mostly caused by bad alignments.
