17x7 vs. 17x8.5 Wheels

Bought a 2015 SR5P last night. Love the truck, hate the factory wheels and the Dunlops. Considering TRD Pro wheels (17x7) or SCS wheels (17x8.5)

Anyone running 17x7's and wish they went wider? Anyone running 17x8.5's and wish they went narrower? I like the style of both wheels and will be sticking with 265/70/17's. Just looking for some input about how wide to go with the wheels. TIA

I got 8.5s because the tire I got specced 8-9.5 inch wheel.

However, I do munch the rim of the wheel a lot. 7 inch rims would have helped prevent that more. Course, maybe in those cases the wheel rim actually helped prevent me from popping a bead if more pressure had been put on the tire in that spot instead.

In reality I do not know if there are any actual negative consequences from putting a tire that says 8-9.5 on a 7 inch rim and a lot of people here seem to do it.

I think the main issue is the load ratings on the tire probably change a bit with the rim sucked in further than recomended. Might need a tad bit more air to maintain wall integrity than an 8.5 rim but... Just speculation.

Stock sized tires on wide rims

Yea, the P-rated stock Dung Loops the car comes with are not good for off-road. You need a LT tire.

If you're sticking with the stock tire size there isn't much reason to go with a wider wheel rim. The SR5 has 7" rims. The Trail Edition comes with 7.5" wheels. We all want better tires for off-road. Go figure.

I'm getting my SCS Stealth 6 wheels installed this Saturday. I'm also staying with the stock sized tire 265/70R17. If your not lifted the stock size is as large as you can go with the width and offset of the SCS wheels. Even so some of the more aggressive AT tires may rub a little and require a little trimming.

I say go with the SCS wheels. The quality of the wheels is second to none.

I'm definitely a Mall Crawler, no shame in saying it. LOL I think I'm going to do 5100's up front set at .85 but really just for looks. I've had them on other 4Runners I've owned and like them a lot. Don't want to loose too much camber and sacrifice ride quality.

As for tires, I'm leaning toward TerraGrapplers. I've also been quite fond of the Firestone Destination A/T's that I've had on a few 4Runners in the past. Either will do the job for my needs.

Mall Crawler here too. Get the SCS wheels, they give you a little wider stance which looks awesome. Out of the two tires I'd go with the Firestones. Had them on my FJ and loved them.

I have TRD pro wheels and I do wish I went wider sometimes. Then I realize once the tires stick further out the fenders, itll throw a bunch of crap on the side of your truck like dirt, rocks and such. I also have 285 and no rubbing with 17x7 even though its not "recommended" for 285. Ultimately I just wish to run 16 inch wheels, cheaper tires and more options, but no go for 5th gens. Here's a picture of how the 265 tires look on 9 inch wheel, not on a 4runner but just a reference. Tacoma I had.

From the pictures I've seen the SCS wheels with the stock 265/70R17 tire sit just about flush with the fender. If they do stick out it's not by much. The other thing to keep in mind is the type of tire you run. A BFG KO2 or mud tire will stick out a lot more than a Firestone Destination AT.

Forgot to mention that the two vehicles will look different with same wheel width. Like on a Tacoma, it only needed 7.5 inch width to be flushed with fender whereas the 5th gen 4runner, its not close to flush at all.

Sorry not trying to derail thread, but what's advantage of SCS over TRD? Just width and looks? For us Mall crawlers.. I bought a SR5 2015 this past weekend and wanted to change the rims while keeping the same stock tires.

I believe just width and looks unless you go 285 because they have a recommended wheel width of 7.5-9 inches. Search a few pages back and there's a thread about TRD pro wheels.

The SCS wheels are wider width for larger tires. They weigh slightly less than the TRD product

PTR20-35110 is 17x7" at 25lbs vs the SCS Stealth 6 is 17x8.5" at 24lbs

The F5 will be released in a few weeks with the same specs except will only weigh 22lbs.

For me it was just personal preference. Both are very nice wheels and great companies to work with. I wanted some thing a little different than the standard black or gunmetal finishes that everyone was getting and SCS had just the wheel. I got the Stealth 6 in the matte gunmetal and machined finish. It looks great in pictures but in person it's amazing!

I went with the old FJ/4r early wheels was told they were 7.5 ? I know 1/2 big deal but have been running 285s since I got it no problems (knockknock) .

I went with the TRD Pro wheels and feel the stance looks just right. I've seen T4R's come in the shop with wider wheels and feel it looks funny. My opinion but take a look at mine.

Looks sharp! The TRD wheels are definitely a nice wheel and look good on the 4Runner. Here is a forum members T4R from the Stealth wheel thread. Tire are the stock Bridgestones. Wheels are just about flush with the fender.
