18's and Terra Grapplers

Got this done a few weeks ago, but have not gotten around to sharing it with all of you. 18x18.5 MB's and 285-60-18 Nitto Terra Grapplers. So far: Love It!

These have been some of my favorite tires for a long time, it was the wheels that took me forever to decide on. I would have gone with the Nitto Mud Grapplers, but did not want to sacrifice that much on-road performance.

First impressions: Handling is good; hold the road much better that the stock Dunlops. I have noticed that it is more subject to Tramlining, but definitely manageable. Cornering is MUCH better and acceleration has not suffered.

Coming next will be a spacer lift, probably Revtek. I really like the look, but it is not quite as impressive as I had imagined (I photoshopped the images ahead of time to get and idea). After the lift, I may consider up-sizing the tires a bit to beef it up.

In its current state, rubbing is minimal - only at hard right turns going forward (especially over bumps) and when turning either way in reverse. I took off the mud flaps in the front (which looks much better BTW) and trimmed the flaps in the rear (much smaller now), but this was all done after the pics were taken.

As everyone else always says...This looks MUCH better in person than in the photos. One of my favorite parts about the rims is that the accents are "anthracite" colored, which matches the grey cladding very well. Definitely draws attention, but not too much.

Those wheels look awesome, although I'm not planning to change from stock, at least anytime soon.
Really like those tires too, wonder if they come in 265/70 17. I'll have to check on that.
That combo really makes your truck stand out, good choice.

Nice Rims! I was going to get those same MB offroad gunner 6 in the 20 inch but at the time they did not have them in stock for 2 month. so I went ahead and upgrade my tire to some 70 revo.

I forgot to mention earlier, but for those interested in these tires, they are noticeably louder than the stock tires. Mainly around 70 mph. Nothing to complain about, however. I will let you know how they handle mud and snow as soon as I get a chance to find out!

They really look sharp. Just right. Not overdone. Subtle.

Those Nittos treads look a lot like the Toyo pattern. Should perform well in snow and wet. Much cheaper than BFG A/T, but it it unproven to a large extent.

Unproven as to durability and treadwear, but for the price I'd be happy to get 65k out of them (I got 68k out of the Pirelli Scorpions) The old style BFG lasted 85k with another 10k more if I was not going into winter. Don't know much about how they do in dirt, gravel, or rocks.

My eyeball tire guage was reading a bit low and I finally got around to checking my tire pressure.

All 4 read around 25-26 psi. This must be how they were filled by Discount Tire. I had just assumed that they knew what they were doing.

I filled them all to around 32 psi. Looks/feels better. Can anybody think of a good reason why I would want them so low for daily on-road driving?

I'm getting a set of Nittos before winter and everything I've been reading and the tests I've seen is they are a nice AT tire but with better than average daily driven on road manners and most people see over 50k out of them which is fine with me since longer lasting tires just generally are harder and don't corner well and BFGs after 50k the rubber gets hard and on road performance really suffers. 50k is fine with me since I don't really see much over 12k a year in my Runner.

I love the look of BFGs but if you don't really off road much and your vehcile is a DD then they aren't the greatest choice since they don't reisist hydroplaning well and their dry cornering leaves a bit to be desired.
I drove my friend's '03 with a set of Nittos and it cornered very well and no hint of hydroplaning once over a stretch of 20 miles and never dropped below 65mph.

Looks good exept they look like the rims that come on the Honda Pilot. But it still looks good

Also, how much snow do you get annually? Just would like to know since we drive thru snow from as early as Oct. and as late as May here in the U.P. Be sure to keep us up to date on the threads.

As far as snow...we get very little where I live, but it is a 30-45 minute drive to the mountains to go boarding, so I will have plenty of chances to evaluate this year. I am sure I will be impressed, however, since my last tires were the stock dunlops...


Anybody have thoughts on the tire pressure?

Stay with stock recomendations....

32-36 psi should be fine. Remember that the MAX psi is for fully loaded to the max towing so make sure the tire monkeys don't fill you tires to 70 psi or something....

There is very little air down air up with low profile tires.
