I had 18s and 17s on my Jeep. I took both off-road and there is no real world difference. My new TRD Off-road Premium came with 17s. I'll be keeping the stock rims cuz I don't care about changing the looks. 17x7.5 works fine for me and I don't have a reason to change.
There is no real world difference is a 33x10.5 in 17in vs 18in. The outside diameter and width are the same on both tire/rim combos. There is about 1/2in of side wall difference but thats it. The side wall difference means nothing.
In general there are more tire options for 17in vs 18in.
In the end its all personal preference. 17 vs 18 will have no real world difference.

I am running 18's on my 4th gen with 3" lift. 275/65/18
So maybe just more of a personal preference I guess?

Yeah, I'm running 18s on mine also. They are probably a little bit easier to beat up but the difference is negligible if you run bigger tires.

I am glad that there doesn't seem to be a difference in function, seems to be just aesthetics. I think I like the ratio of rim to tire on a 18" w/ a 33" tire better. To me its not to much tire and not to much rim......

18" rims with a lift
The thing is when you go to air down for off road the 18" rim has less sidewall rubber to protect the rim, compared to 17" rims with the same diameter tire. The 17" rims can air down more.
But the big 18" rims sure look good in the photos here.
