1985 Build thread -- Tyrone

How you doing 92?!

I agree, I'm a sucker for some good before/afters of any build.

good man. real good.

I like your "family" photo too....especially the trooper car snuck in there. No trooper car here but, we did a same kinda family photo.

did you do the windshield or did a company do it? Joe's 4runner is missing some trim, which I got from a friend, but I'm thinking of getting some universal stuff to black it all out.....just looks like a total pain in the butt to do. I've searched it, and will some more before I decide what we are doing.

Seriously, Tyrone Looks Good!

Seriously Tyrone is a beautifully-restored 4Runner! I like the simplicity and capability of the solid axle. I wish I had known about it before I got mine. However, I do not plan to do serious wheeling- just need clearance and traction to get me over dirt roads to trailhead and back, so I guess my 86 would do.

Regards folks!

Yes, I'm big on car pics and the "family photos"! I have so many friends who have owned so many awesome cars over the years, yet they have NO PICTURES of them! So I always take car pics and often times get them together for the group shots. Hardest thing is finding a time when they're all clean at the same time!

As for the windshield trim, my painter coordinated everything for me. After we got the old windshield out and fixed the rust from the factory trim, I told him what I wanted for trim for the new windshield. He had a glassman he used regularly, so he told them what I wanted and the rest was history.

so i wanna know why exactly did you change out the swampers? gas milage was going down cuz their too heavy?

Bias ply 35x15x15 Swamper TSL's.

Good points- LOVED the look, capable if I ever acually took it off road, LOVED THE LOOK!

Bad points- VERY heavy, and bias tires beat you to death! The ride was brutally harsh......and I'm not too picky when it comes to ride quality!

Gas mileage really wasn't an issue as Tyrone is not a daily driver. But the Swampers killed what little power I had to work with. I saved something like 22 pounds per tire with the switch to the KM2's, and improved the ride and power.

I'm a tire/wheel freak really. With Tyrone, I love the wheels I have, but there are a million different tires I'd like to see on him. I loved the TSL's and KM2's, but I'd love to try some MTR's, Nittos, and several others. Oh well, maybe I'll win the lottery one day!

Congrats on the win, 93toy! I have always thought you have a beautiful rig (I believe I PM'd you about it before), and have done a great job building it up. And as I said before, the new wheels and tires are just fine by me--those are both my all-time favorites (Outlaw II's with BFG Mud T/A's). The Swampers DO look pretty cool, but I'd never buy any myself. Again, congrats!

Tyrone is big pimpin!!
Sport, Z & charger ain't to shabby either.
EWW.

That's sweet. Funny thing is, I just picked up another 3rd Gen, a black 5 speed and also named it Tyrome. Hopefully he can live up to the name.

Good luck with Tyrone and your other 4Runner, both look great.
