1986 eXtra cab, the Back to the Future project begins

Hey guys:hello: I’m back with a new “restoration”/build of a 1986 eXtra cab 4x4 pick up with short bed. I am doing the build with and for my son I also have a good friend helping with the mechanical end of the build.

I need a good rust free bed for the truck and the B pillar garnish for the passenger side of the truck cab.

We are putting together the engine for it right now and I am not sure if I should go for the OEM Genuine Toyota timing chain, the LC Engineering, or an eBay special???? We don’t plan to add any performance upgrades the truck will be put together bone stock for the most part.

We bought the truck less the engine and plan to use the engine out of the 1985 4Runner parts truck we have. The 85 T4R is a 22re automatic transmission with only 83k miles. We are using both engine and trans for our 86 eXtra cab.

Very cool concept but, I hope to be finished before Toyota starts production:

We have a lot of the body removed from the truck and also the 5 speed trans is out.
The truck was found in a back yard here in the Tampa area and had been sitting for years. The owner poped the engine after running her hot then, removed the engine and she sat till a Craig's list sale ad saved her

I have some updates to share....
The engine, auto trans, and lots of other things removed from the 85 4Runner.


On the 86 pick up,
The clutch master was removed and the hole welded over. We removed the rusted battery tray and welded in the mint tray that we removed from the
4Runner.
We cleaned and painted the engine bay in satin black....looks great:thumb3:

Is this going to be a frame off restoration? From the looks of the pictures, you have a good foundation for the project. How's the frame look?

In order to go from 5speed to automatic we removed the dash and all wires from each of the trucks. We used the complete wire harness from the 4Runner in the pickup. Some modifications had to be made to the wire harness as there are things that differ from the 2 trucks. Using parts from the pickup trucks wire harness to do the modifications needed, the harness looks completely stock.

We cut out the section of floor in the 4Runner under the shifter because the holes for the shift linkage is very different between the 5speed and automatic. We installed that section of floor into the pickup so that the floor would be factory correct.

Everything but the cab was removed. We did not remove the cab because the truck was/is very clean. The frame is mint and just needs a light hand sanding before fresh paint is done. The only rust on this truck was the hood and bed everything else is rust free. The hood rusted because it was left in the bed of the truck upside down for years....

A few reasons...I built a 4Runner already, the parts 4Runner had bad rust issues around the windshield and other places that would have made it a hard restore.
The pickup has room for only 1 passenger besides a driver so I know my son’s friends can’t all go joy ridding with him LOL

The shift console will be the factory auto shift setup. I have some of it but not all yet. The parts truck has the brown/red interior and I need gray to match the pickup interior. I may just paint the brown/red stuff I have gray:artist2:

I'm so jealous to see how rust free that pickup/4Runner are. Around here you'd want to stick that in a museum!

The boy cleaned his truck up and is out of the garage today:girl:
We need to re-detail the engine and engine bay now that most of the work is done. We still need to do the A/C, brakes, exhaust, and a few other odds and ends but for the most part she is mechanically right.

A few funny things we found in the engine when we pulled it from the 4Runner...
There was a 6" long screwdriver in the #3 intake runner and a mud wasp nest in the plastic intake tube that blocke 90% of the air flow:wow: The truck did start and run ok even with the blockage(s) LOL

If I could make it slower I would lol, it's for the boy. As it is now it runs to good it's hard not to spin the tires:thumb3:
