1986 might buy, few questions

Thanks for reading, current 4th gen owner, have a line on an 86 for sale, asking 2000 for it likely offer less but I went and looked over it yesterday told him id get back today so whatever I hear from yall betwene now and 5 pm may decide it for me. told it has a new bottom end of motor and timing chain was replaced 16 k ago. current miles 218k. 4 inch lift, 31 in baja mtz with 4:10 gears in the rear (not verified). was the guys hunting truck and it shows. muddy and need a thorough cleaning I will likely line it anyways.

Big issues- clutch is out or almost out...anyone know how hard it is and cost for this? can i do it myself? never done a clutch before

will have to replace some hoses and lines etc but it does have new wires distributer and plugs. alignment fluids etc.

idles fine, no ticking from chain I can hear either. no real rust issues just really needs a cleaning in and under. did look like back end of tranny had a little leak though.

anything i need to look out for here? I appreciate your knowledge as like I said im new to 1st gens. I did go through some of the threads on common issues and used a few things to check.

The cost would be easy to figure out. You will likely need the clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and I would probably price out having the flywheel resurfaced as well. I usually replace the rear main seal while I'm in there but since your bottom end was recently rebuilt that should have been done. Hopefully they replaced the main bearings and not just the rod bearings or the seal could be original. I would ask the guy that.

Without knowing your mechanical abilities it's hard to say whether or not you could do this yourself. It's a pretty simple job on these trucks but whenever someone asks me if they can do something themselves I take that as a sign that they don't know what is involved. My advice would be to buy a service manual and read up on it. If you are comfortable with the steps outlined go for it.
 
Thanks for the response. I am confident I could do it myself after reading up on it and purchasing a few specifics. Im not paying 2k for it though...i will try and post up pics of it if I can attach them somehow, have to call him back in about 4 hours

right on, these vehicles can be very reliable. so fix things as they come you'll learn a lot along the way
personally i'd want something a little better condition but heck if you can get it at a cheapo price and its near by, clean her up throw a clutch in and drive it
 
If you are looking for a clutch people seem to like the heavy duty clutch that MarlinCrawler.com sells. They are the same company that sell the shifter seat and bushing that everyone recommends. If you don't do the work yourself I think I paid $700 to have my clutch I provided installed, flywheel resurfaced and main seal replaced.

White 1st gens are the best! I hope you get it.

thanks for the link. Guy selling entertained my offer for less but is going to give it a week or so more before getting back to me. currently its still for sale though so I may get it .....
