1986 with intermittent starting problem

Okay, new to this site. I am looking for help or advise. I have a 1986 4runner with 22RE. I been experiencing a intermittent starting problem. Thought it was the safety switch but seems it is okay. I used the safety overide and the problem will still be present. I turn the key hear clicking from the inside passenger side. sometimes the engine turns and sometimes it doesn't. this problem started after I pressure washed the engine to remove oil and dirt to replace waterpump. Could it be the starter relay or starter or?

probly got the starter wet, coulda be done for. remove it and dry it out, do a bench test and make sure its still functioning

Could also be the battery or a bad ground somewhere. That's an indication that the starter is not getting enough amperage.

Battery good. I may need to check the ground to battery but, all cables and clamps good. I believe the starter died today. All I get now is a clickfrom passenger side. I believe is the starter relay clicking or the solenoid. All I get when I turn the key is "CLICK"

I think it's more likely a connection than the starter itself. The starter is near the bottom of the engine and likely to get wet in normal driving.

Could be a bad ground as stated before. Just run a couple new ground wires from the engine to the frame and the battery to the frame. I used a 00 wire from the battery to the frame and some flat ground straps from the frame to the engine and havent had any more issues after that.

I've had this problem since my truck was new and still have it, 1986 deluxe 4 cyl. 4 runner.The starter relay just clicks but my battery voltage is fine, I hope someone has the cure because that relay is costly(if thats the cure) and it is intermittent and eventually it always ends up starting when it feels like. I've replaced the starter twice and determined that's not the cause. Maybe the ground?

More times than not it's a bad connection. I'd pull all the connections and hit them with a wire brush of some sorts. I can't imagine the starter getting wet killing it, as i have watched these things be submerged damn near only to fire right back up. Good luck with it.

I just bought a Used 1986 4Runner and the owner had an ignition problem a sa result he put in a starter button the would always turn the motor over when it was turn off. Are there any solutions to this problem or do i have to go through the entire ignition wire setup?

Suzuki samurais have a simular problem. I just bought my first t4r today so I dont know if the starter solenoid is built into the starter or not. If it is go to parts store buy a 30 amp relay (usually around $5) wire a full time hot from the battery to new solenoid. Remove the small wire on the starter that actuates the starter solenoid and use that to actuate the new relay. Now run a wire from the side of the relay that will be hot when you activate the relay back to the starter. In a way you are using the old relay system to activate the new one you just installed. This was called a clickity starter fix in the samurai boards.for some reason over time the old relays didn't carry enough amps to fully engage the starter solenoid they were way up under the dash and a pita to get to. It worked for me and only took took five minutes to install it's worth a try.
