1987 4runner 4x4 not working

Needing some help I have a 22re 4runner And it broke down 6 months ago. Finally got it back up and running went to try out 4x4 and nothing. I have manual lock in hubs. If I put it in 4 low and pop the clutch it almost looks like it wants to spin the front but doesn't. The transfer case had a leak when it sits I'm wondering if maybe its super low on oil? But if i put it in 4wd and try to spin the front drive shaft by hand it wont move so I'm kinda lost..any advicewould be great

First make sure the hubs are unlocked and the tcase is in 2wd when you try to spin the front shaft by hand. It should rotate freely. Then put the tcase in 4wd and try it again, you should be unable to rotate it - if you can, you've got tcase trouble. Now put the tcase back in 2wd and lock in the hubs - again you should be unable to rotate it, and if you can you've got diff trouble. If both those check out, there's no reason for your 4wd not to work? Try that out and report back.
