my 87 runner only runs in the starter position.i can drive the car because I moved my starter to a push button a year ago.the open circuit relay clicks in start but unclicks when released to the on position and the car dies.if I wire tie the key to stay in the starter position the car runs great and this problem occurred on the way to Alaska and I drove 2000 miles with the key pined.i changed the ignition switch did not help.what do you think

This happened in my old jeep once, it turned out to be a faulty ignition control module. I do not believe you have one but you should have an ignition relay and or fuse, either could be bad.

Had a similar problem with my 85 22re. For me it turned out to be something to do with the fuel pump. These trucks only run the fuel pump when in the start position and while running. I'm assuming it's some sort of vacuum switch that takes over the voltage when it's running?? Anyways there's a connector on the drivers fender that can be jumped to test this theory. It sends power to the pump full time (with key on). I never figured out my problem as I sold the truck before I tried to figure it out but hopefully this helps. If not KidV will probably know what to do.

It's Either your C.O.R. Second Coil or Wiring or AFM

Nothing's wrong with your ignition switch. It's in your C.O.R. system.
Most likely in the circuit connected to the second coil Either:
it's not getting positive voltage from the EFI relay,
not getting ground through the AFM contact, OR
second coil is broken (open).

See my explanation of how it works with schematic here

With IGN on, check if C.O.R. is getting 12V from EFI Relay at one of the black wires. The other black should only have 12V if Ign switch is in START position.

If above is good, like mentioned above, short the terminals of the fuel pump test connector.

IF C.O.R. remains energized and engine keeps on running when ignition key is released, then second coil of C.O.R. is good, but it is not getting ground from AFM. Check wiring from C.O.R. "second" coil (green wire on 86-88 4Runner) to AFM, to ground. Also check if AFM contacts are closing when engine is running (air flowing).

IF C.O.R. still de-energizes when ign key is released, either second coil is broken (open), or it still is not getting ground from AFM, check continuity of C.O.R. coils, check wiring (green wire) to AFM. Still a good idea to check AFM contacts if closing with air flow.

That's the beauty of having a highly field-serviceable simple vehicle :)
