1988 4runner 22re Ticking/Knocking

So, I recently bought a simple 88' 4runner with the 22re engine (5spd std tranny) a while ago for just under $600 bucks because the owner thought it was knocking or ticking and that the timing chain possibly skipped. I jumped on it since it sounded like an easy project and I'd rather drive that than my Evo 8 in winter :P.

I am questioning whether the sound it was making while running was valve tick/slap or an actual knock from the block.. I took everything apart today and got the whole head off and found that pistons 1 and 2 both have a small/minor indent of one exhaust valve hitting them. There wasn't a noticeable mark from the other exhaust valve which was odd to me, but I'm unsure if its just those two valves that were making the racket or if its actually a knock since the noise was quite loud and you can hear it at all rpms. Before took the timing chain off I noticed the timing was just a tick or two off. Could this small amount of off timing cause this sound?

I'll have to take a closer look at the pistons and valves later.

Sounds like Rod knock to me.. also I found quite a bit of metal shavings and bits inside the oil pump housing and ill be pulling the oil pan off soon to check in.there.

I'm no expert, but I agree that sounds more like knock than valves or chain slap - it sounds like more than one cylinder knocking, too. I just had to chase both problems on mine and my valves still aren't quite right, so the noises are fresh in my head. :)

I think you're in for a full rebuild. You can get long blocks starting at $1700, or the goto for roll-your-own rebuild kits is www.engnbldr.com - Ted is the bomb.

I'll have to take the block out soon and check her out I guess. Was hoping I wouldn't have too :P but oh well.
 
If you pull the differential first, you can drop the oil pan and get to the bearings from under the truck, but it's a PITA. I think if you're knocking and found shavings, you're right to skip that part and just yank it out of there.
 
Yeah, I'll just be getting a cherry picker and take her out of there. Was hoping this would be a simple head job :/ Ah well. Do rods and bearings usually go on 22re's? I've always heard these are super reliable engines. It was quite odd to me that the bottom end would go first.
 
It's not common, no. I drove around for 30 minutes with a bearing cap rattling around loose and my bearing was still perfect when I looked at it, they're pretty durable little machines. Maybe your PO overheated it or ran it dry of oil or something.
 
I have a sound something like that but it only last for 30sec when I first crank up and it goes away. Figure I will live with it, PSI on all cly is above 170. Dont know what it is.

Well, what I think happened is that the timing skipped and then it bashed a few valves and damaged something causing the oil pump to get seized with metal shavings and then it may have over heated and caused the knock :P
 
Found out its two rods which were causing the knock. So should I just order a master rebuild kit for the block along with new rods and bearings? Should I also have the crank inspected and machined if necessary?

I'm definitely having the timing belt/chain and guides, etc. and the whole head redone as well, but my main focus is the bottom end right now.
