My 1988 4runner shifter Might be messed up...Every time I leave off of first gear it pops out. . Why is it doing this?

It might just need shifter seats. The shifter seat is the cup thats underneath the shifter. Its easy enough to check, pull the boots off and use a pair if snap ring pliers to take the shifter out of the housing. You dont need to take the whole shifter housing off of the top of the tranny.
When you get the boots off you will notice the square shaped slot thay the shift lever is in. Take your snap ring pliers and put it in the square slot, open up the pliers and push down and turn it should pop right out.
When you look inside and dont notice a plastic cup underneath,then thats your problem. Also it might be partially in there/broken. Dont worry if you drop some of the old seat down inside when you try to pull it out. Just dont drop any metal in there Run to the local parts store and bam.
