1988 6 cyl 4 runner

I am looking to get my 6 cyl rebuilt and I want to see what are some options to increase horse power. I had one mechanic tell me there isn't anything for the 6 cyl motors to increase horse power. I find that hard to believe. I know I can do that k&n 57-9006 57 series FIFPK performance intake kit... and do some larger exhaust tubing matched with free flowing muffler.

But I am wondering if anyone has some ideas on what I should do? What are some options here?

Hoping to talk to someone that knows what they are doing with these motors first year 3.0 6 cyl. 1988. my head gaskets went and I may as well do a rebuild as my motor has 300,000 miles and was getting pretty tired.

Yeah, the 3.0 never got the aftermarket humming like the later engines did. Outside of external bolt-ons like the intake you mentioned, headers and free-flow exhaust, and possibly a JET computer redo, there is little to be done with these. There IS some outfit that builds a beefier 3.0 for sale as a finished engine, but I can't think of the name right offhand.

DOA makes cams. That with a a set of headers and a camry afm is about the best its gonna get for the 3vze. But if you have to pull the motor, I agree with putting a 3.4 or even a (gasp!) 4.3 vortec in there.

I think you mean these two places... funny that they are both in Oregon.

I've been reading up on this one, and using the somewhat newer Vortec engine is the way to go--the numbers it puts out are similar to the early/mid 90's V8. There is a ton of aftermarket support, too. This engine in the 4Runner would be a solid upgrade, with great potential for future build-ups.

Like the 22re, I'm not sure dumping a bunch of money to try squeeze a little more out of the 3.0 is worth the resources. If you rebuild it, keep it stock with quality work. You can polish a turd, but it's still a turd.

Otherwise, swap it as others suggest.
