1990 4runner 2.8 desiel

On our way to sisters 18th and the 4runner just lost power and was making a terrible LOUD clicking almost banging noise and started blowing extra smoke out of the pipe. We had just driven up a reasonably steep hill on the highway and 3/4 of way to top just started this horrible noise. I managed to get it back home but wont be going far for a bit. If anyone is anywhere near the sunshine coast and has a replacement engine or anyone might have an idea what it could be and if it might be repairable One last thing do these engines have any coincidental problems that most might suffer from

The Toyota 2L & 2.8L diesel engines are very low powered for that size truck. So no doubt you would strain going up a big hill. Is yours a turbo? If not I don't think they make even 100hp. Before you do anything check your fuel filter and see if it is clogged. Does it still make noise when running? BTW, those engines have a history of being very reliable.
