Hello;
My 1990 4Runner 3.0 sat for the past couple of months after a severe coolant leak sidelined it at the end of winter. I was recovering from back surgery at the time so I was in no condition to chase it down.
I get back into it the other weekend and noticed the leak was from an elbow hose that ran from the front driver's side of the block into a tobacco can shaped device on the side of the block; I presume this to be an oil cooler? Anyway I replaced the hose and it seemed not to be leaking. The severe coolant leak now seems to be gone.
Also, I used an engine block test to check for combustion gases in the cooling system. It passed twice (fluid stayed blue). During that testing I noted
steam came out the radiator filler neck so I'd guess the thermostat is opening.
The problem now is that once it warms up, it generally stays somewhat cool when parked facing uphill. Drive it around at all and the temperature shoots WAY up. The other weird thing is that the top of the radiator gets hot but the bottom does not. Also there is no heat from either the front or rear seats heaters.
So what is this? Lots of air in the system? Bad radiator or water pump?
Thanks!
