1990 4Runner V6 auto 4WD

I recently picked up this 1990 4Runner and I was changing oil and filter when I had a hell of a battle with the front skid plate.
some moron rivited the plate on at the back toward the trany it took me awhile to figure out it was rivits and not screws, I was able to breake the rivits and get the plate off.
Is it a good idea to keep the skid plate on the truck or can I just leave it off. I won't be off roading?
Regarding the Transfer case behind the trany. If you open the fill hole [take out the filler plug] should fluid run out to indicate its full. I can't get my little finger in the hole its too small. How much does the transfer case hold and should you use ATF Dextron III? My filler plug is a short bolt with a 19mm head, my drain plug is a round allen head bolt are these the normal plugs used on the tranfer case?

The skid plate is there to protect the engine and everything else back there from rocks ect. SOOOO if you toyota is not in its natural habitat (off road) Then yes its ok to have it off. DO NOT USE ATF FOR YOUR T-CASE!!!!! :bash: Use gear oil 75W-90. Amsoil is the best stuff by the way. If fluid comes out the fillin' hole its full. I dont know if those are the normal bolts or not. Hope that helps.

Ermm.. if this is a 90 model V6 3.0 ,, it likely has an A340H transmission with integral transfer case. The tranny and transfer case cannot be separated. In fact, the transfer case shares the same ATF that runs in the transmission. See this link for more info:

I have a 92 with the A340H tranny/transfer case. You can find this information on a sticker located on the driver's side door jamb. This tranny/t-case combo takes a little bit more than 6.5 quarts of Dexron III to refill after changing. Just did mine 2 months ago. You should drain both the tranny and t-case (they have separate drain plugs). All the new ATF for both the the tranny and t-case goes in through the dipstick tube. DO NOT overfill.

LOL you both are right, the funny thing is He never said if he had a Manual or Auto tranny.

So if it is Auto ATF
If it's Manual API gear oil.........................
