I haven't had the 4runner very long and the steering always seemed to be a bit odd. I figured it was due to a combination of worn out tires and steering parts. I decided to install a Rough Country lift. At the same time I replaced both cv joints, all ball joints, all tie rod ends and steering stabilizer. Installed 33" General Grabbe tires on 15 x 8 **** Cepek DC2 wheels. When driving to get aligned, truck was a bear to keep going straight. Even driving on a freshly paved road, it was hard work to try to go straight. It was all over the road. After alignment, the problem was still there. Here is what I have done since
1. Tried various tire pressure between 35-20 lbs.
2. Put 31's back on- no change
3. Replaced idler arm and pitman arm
4. Cranked torsion bars to level truck. Rear was high after lift (sagging torsion bars?) Thought the rear high would put caster in the negative.
5. Checked free play in steering wheel. Adjusted gear box a little tighter. Should adjuster be difficult to turn to tighten and loosen??
6. Checked and repacked front wheel bearings
7. Aligned front again, maxing out caster at 2.5
What am I missing?? I am thinking a new gear box, but don't want to throw parts on if I have no solid reason. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
