1991 Hilux Surf tint (4runner tint removal)

:noidea:Okay, so I just got myself a JDM 1991 Hilux surf turbo diesel. So far the vehicle is stock, has been rebuilt with the 3.0L head and has newer tires on it.


MY question is, the factory installed tint (not inbetween the glass). It has this hideous disgusting silver mirror tint on the back windows, and on the tailgate window but on the tail gate window as well is says (IN THE TINT MIND YOU) "Urban off road vehicle made by toyota". This just doesnt work for me, and because I am going to be Dipping the whole truck black, I also want to tint the windows....


So, has anyone had this factory mirror tint on their vehicle, if so, how did you remove it? How long did it take. Or if you tinted over it (under it?) how did it look afterwards?

Any advice appreciated.

Are you sure it's factory tint?
I can't see Toyota writing something in the tint.

Replace the glass

In my case- i desired the gold tint for my 91. I hit the junk yards and stripped the pieces back- rear quarter and back door glass for what I wanted.
Speaking of wants--- I would pay for your Nudge bar and brackets- are those OEM?:behindsofa:

Well this is a JDM vehicle, so the tint on this bad boy was installed and a Toyota dealer in Japan 22 years ago.

Had I bought the vehicle, knowing I would keep it stock, I wouldnt mind the Gold/Silver tint. But next week this little beast is going to be totally different, it will be all black no more blue or chrome.

Everything on this truck is stock, except the KC lights on the bar, and the Tires.

I get a lot of weird stairs driving as I am driving on the wrong side also, which is why I would like to know if anyone has tried removing this 22 year old tint, it doesnt look like it will come off easy, more like scrapeing not peeling. :doh:

It's easier with a sunny day with some black plastic and vinegar (Windex). Spray the window, seal it with black plastic (tape in place) and bake in sun for an hour. It will (should) almost peel off.

I'd just have a tint shop remove it professionally. I have seem so many tint removals gone wrong.
I have heard of the plastic bag in the sun method working, but I have heard it with ammonia.

Correct... ammonia, which is why windex works. I watched my son in law do this to my XJ and I was surprised it worked so well.
