1992 4runner build

Picture's work fine now.

With my foot CV's don't hold long on 32's open, so it really depend's on your foot i guess.

Picked up my wheels today, pinstriped them and had the 35's mounted and balanced. here are two pics of them on the 4runner. They look huge to me...

I also have the rear coils installed. I am going to take the rear sway bar off I think. I don't know for sure. I guess if I had some quick disconnects I could leave it for the street. We'll see.

So next is the rear ring and pinion, locker, rear shocks, front shocks and fender trimming (after flexing it out) modify the panhard bar mount, install the bumpers front and rear, rocker guards, etc. :drummer:

I would leave the rear sway bar. Its actually a pretty good setup. You wont loose any flex because of it and it will help keep your tires on the on the ground when articulating.

Youll be fine with 35s, I wheel 35s on stock suspension with an open front. So far ive been lucky. But I would still carry a spare CV. :thumb3:

I finally got the rear gears and locker set up with all new bearings etc. It is in the truck and I put it back together enough so could check for flex, shock length and metal trimming. Here are some poser shots:

Now I will check the shocks that I bought for the front to see if they will fit and order up some for the rear. I also mounted the front bumper. The rear is just hanging off the truck at this point. I did remove the rear swaybar entirely at this point. I have the front disconnected too. I am going to make quick disconnects for both I believe.

It needs an alignment and some exhaust work still. I may have to crank up the torsion bars alittle to get it to sit level. We'll see how it sits will all the gear, tools, spare parts and tire in the back. :hatsoff:

lockright lunchbox type. I have driven around my driveway but not on highway. So far so good. I will update as soon as I have it on the road. :nerd:

Get some BJ spacers, and uncrank the bars. Youll be able to keep the current height and get some front end flex back.

awesome build i have a 90 and it's nice to see some one that is building one similar to mine keep us informed. how much lift did the rear get with those springs? i just installed lj coils and it gave me 4 inches, i just ordered bj spacers i hope that levels things out for me (got the stink bug look right now). also nice to know about the 35's

It is too soon to tell what the front lift will be. I have the Trail Gear front bumper and a winch going on and that will likely bring the front down even more... :ybrick: I am guessing that I have around 1 1/2" of lift at this point in the front. I will keep you posted. :hatsoff:

Alittle update and not a good one. Had one of my mechanic friends stop by and diagnose the engine "miss" the truck has... bad valve... #6... 24lbs of compression! WTF? :redbrick:   After reading about the cross over exhaust I kinda knew that it was very likely. I plan on addressing the exhaust at the time I put on the newly rebuilt heads. I will run the passenger side down instead of around the back and attach it to the exhaust under the truck somewhere kinda like a "Y" pipe.
If I am going to pull one head I might as well have both heads redone. Anyone have any recommendations for the Twin Cities MN area? I would appreciate any insight/advice. I don't know how the other valves look so it will be a "see what they need" build. I am going to get to painting the bumpers and rocker guards today and keep plugging away on the build. Thanks guys:thumb3:

I went wheeling in Northern MN this past weekend at Gibert, MN. What a great offroad park! Excellent trails from easy to :wtf: I went with some original members of HTR 4x4 Club (my first 4x4 club) and some new friends with Toyota rigs. The HTR guys run mostly Jeeps so there was some good spirited jabs whenever a Jeep needed to winch or a Toy got stuck. Anyway I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND anyone visit this offroad park.
Here are some pics of the 4runner and the other rigs wheeling:

Me hung up on a rock on the fuel tank on a hill during a brief rain storm. The pic doesn't do the hill justice... PULL CABLE!

Before I left I welded both Trail Gear rocker guards on and istalled both Trail Gear front and rear bumpers. I also installed the front (Doetch Tech) and rear (OME) shocks, bled the brakes, installed the aftermarked CV shafts from O Reillys (with the lifetime warranty), put on some stickers :fro:, packed all my tools, camping gear etc. The night before I left I was installing the plastic inner fenders that I cut down after modifying the metal front fenders/lower fire wall I drilled right into the god damn main wiring harness!! I looked and thought there was more than enough room! At midnight no less. So I was up til 3 am to get it fixed and finish loading, and was up at 6am to leave for wheeling.
I finished the exhaust with the SuperTrapp muffler. I have to say I LOVE THE SOUND!! It sounds like a big block Chevy when putt'ing around. I managed to drop it off some rocks too and did a little damage to the muffler. :crybaby: When I flexed it out the rear tires rubbed a little on the front, rear and top of the rear fender openings so I will modify that soon. The front only rubbed on the plastic inner fender so I will cut that down too. I changed the down bumpstops to a better material (poly) because the originals were cracked and shot. I left the original up bumpstops in and they worked great. I was able to use all the flex available (which is not a lot but more than enough for me and the wheeling I do with this truck) and not blow up any shafts.
The steering... well that is another story. All the parts worked fine but the front tires like to point toward eachother when hill climbing...:happens: So I will modify the steering to stay straighter and lower. Not sure how yet but I have some ideas. I really like the way this rig bombs down the dirt trails with the ifs and the coil rear suspension. I can hammer pretty well without loosening any fillings. The rig felt quite stable with the swaybars removed on the off camber sections of the trails. The only damage the truck sustained was a slightly "smaller" fuel tank and a broken tail light. Not too bad. I really heated up the engine on this long hill climb and it never overheated. The radiator has a crack up by the fill neck that must have keep relieving the pressure. So I will repair/replace that too. The bumpers and rocker guards are scratched up and held up great. Even with 4.5 cylinders it has good power for me wheeling. Can't wait to have all 6 and some lower RPM torque cams if I can find them.

So I will modify the steering, trim the fenders, move the fuel tank(?), fix the alignment, wash the truck, start collecting parts for the head repair/replace, pack lighter.

In September I went wheeling with my buddy and my daughter. It was a beautiful day and I decided to trailer instead of drive the runner to the event. I was following my buddy down the trail and I dropped into a ravine and got caught between the ravine ledge and a tree... the tree won. It popped out the drivers side rear glass. My daughter didn't even notice, it was quiet I guess. I was pissed off:wtf: The damage to the fender under the window was later when I used it as a pivot point on a rock...

Later that day I was climbing a hill I guess I thought I should have easily made and my eyes rolled back into my head... and when the dust settled I had blown up the front ring and pinion, bent the steering and broke one CV shaft. Looking back that was really stupid.:ybrick:

That brings me to last weekend when I replaced the broken glass and tore the front end out of the truck to look over the damage. Now I have to decide if I am going to try to find a 5.29:1 front end or gear set and rebuild the front end or do a SAS. Still doing research at this time. That is it for now!:sleepy:

That really sucks. Sorry to hear about that.
That's a nice shot of the damage... but what the heck is the story on that upside down Explorer in the background???
