1992 4runner that's not running

Found a decent 1992 4runner at a local impound lot. However, it is not running. Dude says he thinks its just the engine but that's all he will say. What am I looking at in getting a new motor? Cost etc... Everything else on it appears pretty good.

Assuming it is a 3.0 3VZE, you'll want to install the 3.4 5vzfe. It's a better engine and will match up with the existing transmission assuming that is ok. Expect to pay $1200-$1500 for a rebuilt.If you can find one in a junk yard and rebuild it yourself, you will spend less.

Not the end of the world, but if you have the money for a new engine and tranny for a 2nd gen, why not just buy a 3rd gen or a running 2nd gen?

That was the plan but I can't find one I like local. This non running 92 is only $500.
