1993 Transmission Woes

Hello all. Brand new to T4R. Just purchased a 1993 4Runner for my teenage sons to begin driving. When purchased, I knew the transmission had fault. The issue is that when put into any gear, reverse or forward, 2H-4H-4L, nothing happens. Can't feel it shifting at all. Park works though. Took it to a local transmission shop here in town and the quote for rebuild is $3,000.00. Is this reasonable for a 4x4 with the V6? Should I just try to purchase a used one to drop in? Or is there some troubleshooting I might do personally before forking out more than the truck may be worth.

Dunno if it's reasonable but that at least what everyone wanted to rebuild mine here in Tucson. I would go used or at least try Checker/Autozone. I think they wanted $1500 with a year warranty.

I had issues with the shift solenoids but I think you're in a different ball park with your tranny. Good luck, let the boys do the dirty work! They appreciate the 4Runner better

$3K sounds a bit high to me, but prices vary with location. This isn't an AAMCO or Cottman shop is it ?

Have you checked for trans error codes?

Go look on craiglist and just buy another 4runner with a blown head gasket and a good tranny for around $1000. Then you will have a whole extra parts vehicle.

Dump a bottle of the Lucas oil tranny fix in it and see I it helps. My dad had an old shop s-10 the guy that worked for him just beat to death and back again. He put a bottle or two in it. That thing would not pull in forward or backwards it has been run strong now for about 6 years after he just put the tranny fix in it he says he puts it in it every time he changes the fluid now. Might try and see if it will help it out. Can't hurt... And I would get a used one for the TX JDM guy.
