1994 3VZ-E Low Oil Pressure and Valve Train Noise

I've got (apparent) low oil pressure in my 3VZ-E, which I just got, so I don't know how long that's been the case. There's also what seems to be valve train noise, which is better when cold, but I don't know for sure if that's what it is. I can try posting a video if that helps.

The pressure starts around the middle of the gauge when cold (10w-40 high-mileage Mobil 1, which helped it over the previous 10w-30), and by the time it's fully warmed up (needle just to the left of the thermometer symbol) the pressure is just to the right of the L. Acceleration of the engine moves it slightly to the right.

Now, I had set an appointment to have it checked out on Friday by a well-reputed shop, but they're about 30 minutes away from me, and I'm starting to worry I could damage the engine by driving it there. I'm also worried I may get stuck there if they need to do all kinds of work on it. I called them to ask about it and they strongly suggested I tow it there, which is all kinds of work or expense for me as well.

So, in your educated opinions:

1) Should I drive it any more AT ALL right now? Do I risk too much by doing so?
2) Should I try to diagnose it more myself first? I just got the Haynes repair manual, and it sounds like I should maybe try dropping the oil pan and having a look around. I've never done so before, though I have the tools (I think). I was just going to leave it to the mechanic, but that's when I assumed I could safely drive it there. I've also ordered an oil pressure gauge via Amazon prime. It looks like I should be able to check the pressure fairly easily. What's the easiest way to get to the sender to check?

EDIT: BTW I've been reading this forum and other sources trying to figure this out, found some good info, but the responses range from "that's normal for the 3VZ-E" to "Stop driving now!"
EDIT2: Got an estimate to tow it where I need it... $200. Ouch. I could rent a trailer and tow it with my Traverse, but that'd cost $60 and have me driving all over the place (1 hr to pick up, 1 hr back home, 40 min to shop, 1 hr 40 min to drop off trailer, 1 hr back home).
EDIT3: I may try option 3, drop it at a place closer by that I don't know as well tomorrow.
EDIT4: Found the pressure sending unit, pretty accessible actually. I'll try hooking up the gauge when it arrives tomorrow. If the pressure's good then all's well. I'm also uploading a video. The ticking sound is definitely coming from the top middle of the engine.

So... Did you install the aftermarket gauge? What's the oil pressure when fully warmed up?
3VZ-E's don't have lifters... the valves are actuated directly from the cam lobes through tappet buckets that are adjusted via shims.

It's not a permanent gauge, it's one for testing. It arrives this afternoon. Is that valve train noise normal on a 3VZ-E? Most of the videos on YouTube are of engines with "problems".

I just hope I don't end up needing an engine rebuild. I was looking so hard for head gasket problems I didn't notice the oil gauge/sound when I test drove it and unfortunately I'm not that experienced with diagnosing and fixing cars.

If that's what it takes, so be it, I think I'll still be in my approximate price range for this project, but I imagine it'll take a while.

Yes, I believe that there is a fair amount of valve train and fuel injector noise on the 3VZ-E engines.
Has it always been this way or did it recently get worse? What oil filter are you running?.. Maybe try installing a new filter just to eliminate that.

I just got the car on Sunday so I don't know the history, unfortunately. I got an oil change and they put in a Pennzoil filter. I tried putting in higher-viscosity oil (M1 10w-40 high mileage) the next day (saved the oil from the previous day for winter) and didn't change the filter since it's brand new. I have more filters coming, the Toyota 90914-YZZD3 as recommended on I think pirate4x4. They also arrive today.

BTW the oil that came out after a day was already pretty dirty. It was Castrol full synthetic.

On the plus side for the engine, the head gasket situation seems good and AFAICT it's not leaking much oil if any.

Ay brother.
I got almost the exact issue with the same engine. Low pressure, and a ticking. However, my ticking isn't near as loud as yours is, but its coming from the same place. I doubt your problem lies with the head gasket. I replaced mine recently and the problem remains.

Did you check your pressure with a separate gauge? I'm waiting for mine to come, UPS usually gets here around 15:00 MDT, so I have about another 3 hours to wait. I'm wondering if it's just that the valve train needs a serious tune-up. The good news is that I remembered there's a free bus service from here to the shop and back, so if I determine the oil pressure is OK to drive it there, I can easily just leave it and let them take their time fixing it.

Alright man, sounds good, eager to hear status. But TBH, don't worry about getting it there and back and your transport. that should be the least of your problems! :D

If the car needs fixing it will most definitely be my foremost problem! I have the inclination but not the time to fix it myself.

Good news, everyone!

Got the meter on, which is the most difficult job I've ever had of screwing something into something else when it really belonged there, on account of the tight space and the long hose.

Started up at 75 PSI cold idle (~800 RPM)
As it warmed up it dropped to about 20 PSI at idle
Climbed up to about 75 PSI whenever I revved the engine, tested up to 5500 or so. I guess the release valve is probably set to 75 since that's the top of the spec.

Time for a new sending unit.

EDIT: Ugh, I thought it was a $30 part, guess that's the dummy light version. 1sttoyotaparts wants around $50, list is like $75! I may just pick it up when I go have my steering recall done on Monday.
