1995 2nd Gen, new owner and questions

Hello, I'm Richard and I love Fords... 65 mustang 66 bronco and 75 bronco... BUT I also am loving this 1995 4runner that my wife and I picked up.

we picked it up a few months ago, and I've been meaning to join a Toyota forum and ask a few questions about it... we have mostly done nothing except put on some custom seat covers (which my wife found from this website I'm sure) that were cheap and highly rated. I think a great buy fgor the truck

The Truck has 155k miles on it, the previous owner bought it form original owner with 55k miles in 1998, so for the next 15 years, it's only gotten 100k miles.

the truck was (we have since gotten dirt on it) very clean when bought, only wear and tear in driver seat. the battery is from 2008 and still great, the AC is cold, the radio is stock... in all I really think it's just been maintained, still has it's clutch fan, it's the v6 and auto combo, I'm pretty sure it's the 3.0L

mixed driving we are getting avg of 17.5mpg, some records have been as nice as 20mpg. While we would like to keep and maintain that number, I was wondering besides the normal "every car can get better mpg if you do XYZ" speech, is there something Toyota specific that can help?

Now to the issues...
We were climbing a hill in northern AZ past payson to the Rim, and we lost power, engine still running, but the hill made the car just slow down to a crawl. we are planning on taking this to Utah and cali in a few weeks and I know the mountains in the red wood forests are just as steep and I was thinking is there anything that would cause this? I have replaced fuel and air filters, made sure the tires are good to not 'over work' the engine, I understand the engine is 'weaker' than others, I think I had the ETC (for trans shifting) off, I am asking if that is 'common' or expected, we were loaded with our large dog, my wife and I and our camping gear. on the way back I kept the ETC on, and turned off the O/D for larger hills, seemed to help but still asking if there is anything I should worry about on 'lack of power'. I think we were going about 55mph up hill, and it just barely went 30-35 for the rest if hill. after was our turn off so don't know if it was the hill or just something happening, but HUGE lack of power.

The AC, I understand the AC is trying to save us gas at idle, but it gets too hot, and for future kids we need the AC to work in park, slow traffic, and stop lights. currently the AC compressor turns off due to 'low rpms' can we 'tweak' this so it stays on?

when first starting the car, there is a HIGH pitched 'wine' that hurts my ears, almost 'hydraulic' like, thinking it's either brakes or steering. how do I stop this?

how difficult will the drivers door be to tear apart? I know there might be clips that hold it on, are there any tips and tricks? maybe someone already took some pictures for me... the lock is detached from the electric bits... sounds simple to do, just haven't gotten to it.

Is there anyway to turn on all 'dome' lights from the front? the middle dome light is never on with doors, so I figure the light bulb is probably bad, but the rear dome at the window, is there a way to turn it on in the front?

I hear the timing chain in these engines are critical, my cousin (mechanic) upon looking at this truck noticed a lot of engine bay work, including a brand new radiator, injectors, wires, hoses, etc.... he did see "New RTV' on the water elbow coming through the timing cover, thinking they already did the timing.

I don't think the truck was abused, think it was 'dads' truck and the family sold it after his passing.

well that's about it, sry bout the long read... any help would be appreciated.
I'm sure I'll think of more.

One thing I did was adjust my idle up a little. My A/C likes to turn off around 800-900 RPM. So I adjusted the idle up to around 1000. Stays pretty cold now.

You're getting great mpg for that truck. My best tank has been 18.5. I'd kill for 20. I think you're fine there.

What grade was the hill? 30-35 mph doesn't sound right. You should be able to hold it at around 60. Hopefully someone with some expertise will chime in on this one.

I can't say for sure if you have a more serious issue with the lack of power on big hills, but I know that my last stock '95 with a 5-spd had similar issues when I crossed the Continental Divide and related CO Rockies--I had to drop down to 3rd gear and scream it up the mountains to hold 50 mph (little econoboxes were whizzing by me--woohoo). The really bizarre thing, though--it got the best mileage I've ever seen from it during those impossible climbs! My usual was about 17-18 on the highway, and while beating the snot out of it like that, I saw over 21 (confirmed on the next tank as well, so no mistake)--once back on semi-level terrain, it went back to its usual mileage. Weird. Truck always ran great--no running issue to point to that might explain the lack of power. I have read where some have increased the stock timing a little to gain some extra power--might search around on that. And yes, if you have a stock V6, it IS the 3.0.

so where is the idle screw, I'm used to carbs lol... pics are friends so if you can much appreciated.

my cousin switched a vacuum hose around and that kicked up the idle a bit, but the mpg went down to 9, so I swapped it back. sure the AC was on, but not at that cost.

I guess the idle screw would be around the gas butterfly, guess I'll route the gas cable to the throttle....

Well it's funny, it didn't like 65mph there, and usually slowed down to about 55-60 on most climbs, but coming back, I hit 75 and the power band was happy, roughly 3600+ rpm, anything below and it would slow to a crawl again. so mid 'speed' it's really strange and I'm not familiar with computer cars...

Welcome from another ford guy! I have an early 65 stang as well

Beautiful... I honestly love my mustang, and broncos. the mustang is my 1st car, the 66 is my 2nd, the 75 my 4th... and the Toyota is, my first 'computer' car... 3rd was a 72 dodge dart that I sold back to my dad after a week lol... Down side is, wife wants' 1 project car... eh so I kind of choose a 66 with a 75 body... it'll be one car when done :D titled 66... (so technically 2nd car ever owned.)

maybe that explains the 75 mph and 3600rpm vs the 65 at 3300rpm, if lower than 3500, it can't climb... tempted to change the rear gears one step higher to use those rpms at slower speeds

Here's a link with a pic of the screw for adjusting the idle. Also, as mentioned before, check your timing. I was once having problems and found out my timing was somehow set around 5. Probably knocked the distributor out of adjustment when I flopped the truck. Anyways, adjusted it to around 12 and got a lot of my power back. The second link is how to adjust your timing. It's an old post, so it looks like the pictures are no longer included. The instructions are pretty clear though.

Timing Adjustment for 1988-1995 3.0L V6 - YotaTech Forums

I found that with the 3.0, 3000 rpm was the start of the sweet spot--when driving down the highway, if I was going fast enough to have the rpm's at or above 3000, the truck would hold speed without downshifting. If the rpm's dropped below 2900 while climbing, I would slow down and have to downshift to hold speed. So a simple speed adjustment to raise the rpm's helped a lot (providing the speed limit or your nerves allows it--LOL). These engines are pretty sensitive to taller tires/gearing changes--each step up in tires drops you below the optimum operating range and affects your acceleration and overall power.

Tires?? Changed the timing and idle...

Looking at getting BFG's 235/75r15's All Terrains... currently have the Michelin brand street tires in that size with a lot of dry-rot... don't think they will hold up much longer.

what's the usual stock size for these 4 runners? the guy at the counter tried to get me to go up to some 30x9.5r15's I think those are almost an inch bigger, that would rob power on hills and change my speedo. so that's out of the question.

the RPM I bumped up just so the A/C is on in park and in drive, just so barely... almost 700rpm, before I was running 450-500 rpm :wow: wow that was low.

just had a mechanic friend look at it, he said everything on there is clean and new, and offered to buy it from me...

I also changed the static timing to 12*, little difference, not much change.

I have a 2008 battery, it still works, how long of life do you think is left?

Thx Richard
