1995 4Runner - Old Man Emu install, with PICS!

So I spent all Saturday installing these new HD OME springs.

They are installed and the ride is nice! The vehicle is much more responsive and feels like it accelerates quicker (from full stop)

My first thought after removing the jackstands and hydraulic jack was DAMN THAT IS SOME LIFT (see photos)

The rear end is lifted nicely now but it's definitely higher than the front. I can't fully decide how I feel about the new look. Do you guys think it looks ok with the rear being higher than the front? Do you even notice? Is it a more aggressive look, or just silly?

I havent yet adjust the torsion bars, but may do that based on the feedback I get here.

My other thought is now my tires look so small! Lol, maybe I need larger tires now?!

I think your truck looks awesome, bigger tires would be a great idea for sure. I'm making my 4th gen look more 2nd gen, streamlining it. haha, keep up the good work.

That looks really good and i am thinking about doing the same thing so i was wondering what rate spring did you go with, the 900 medium or the 901 heavy duty?

they are definitely stiff for every-day driving. I don't use my vehicle for work commuting, though, so I don't mind. Also, for now I only installed the springs. I plan to install the OME F/R shocks within the next 6 months.

I haven't yet loaded up the vehicle since I installed these. I'm taking a trip to Tahoe next weekend and will have a full-load then, so I can update you once I return!
 
the rear seems to have settled a bit since the original installation

Just finished purchasing the ARB Old Man Emu (OME) setup for my rig.

Already had installed the rear springs a few months back. Just now purchased the front and rear shocks, as well as the steering dampener/stabilizer.

So excited to get this all installed!
 
Argh!!! My catalytic converter was stolen on 2/26!

How do I prevent it from being stolen next time?! Can anyone recommend a good alarm with motion sensors?

I have my new OME springs and shocks at home, I'm just waiting for the weather to clear up before I get to work. How was the install? Is a second pair of hands necessary?

The install was "fairly" easy. I'm no car mechanic by far, but I had a buddy around and we were able to get it done in a few hours.

Few lessons learned:

1. Spring Compressor: If you got the HD springs, you'll definitely need a spring compressor (Macpherson Strut Spring Compressor). Just get the kind you can rent (for free) from the local auto store (Kragen/ORiellys/AutoZone). It's a tool that grasps the springs from the outside (only) and then you manually turn the key to slowly compress the springs. The HD springs are longer than the stock springs, so it's not easy to fit in without compressing. That said, we were able to fit in the drivers side spring WITHOUT the compressor. But on the passenger side, the gas tank is in the way and after trying 60-90min to pry/squeeze it in, we decided to pick up the spring compressor. Here's what the tool looks like (http://bit.ly/dOvJpa)

2. Lateral Control Rod: After we installed the HD springs, we had the HARDEST time re-aligning the passenger side bolt of the lateral control rod (seen here http://bit.ly/gkXHJI). Again, because the HD springs are longer, the passenger side of the rod did not want to line up with the hole for the bolt. We played around with this one for a few hours. We eventually figured it out after taking a step back - we needed to apply more weight to the vehicle so that the springs could compress. This allowed the bolt to line up. My friend weighs about 250lbs and we had him sit on the tailgate of the vehicle. Ta-da! Took us a damn long time to figure out! Alternatively (I'm just realizing this as I type), you could use the spring compressors to aid in getting the bolt to align.

F/R shocks arrived today!

F/R shocks and steering dampener / stabilizer arrived. can't wait to install!

Cool! Thanks. I was looking at the same site. Time to start saving up and cure the rear in sag later this summer.
