1996 A/C Heater Defroster control

Help, my control will not slide to defrost position. I know I need to check the cable and see if maybe something has wedged in side preventing the lever from sliding. Is there an easy way to dismantle to gain access or do I need to remove the whole center console apart? 1996 SR5

See if you can operate the heater control valve on the firewall to which the cable is attached. It my be frozen. If it is hard to open and close, you might be able to take it off and clean the inside of any build up.

You might be able to see what the problem is by lying on your back in both the driver and passenger foot wells and looking towards the center of the dash.
Operate the heat/defrost lever to see what's binding.

Removing the center part of the console is a 5 minute job.

The control that adjusts flow between defrost, floor, and dash vents does not connect to the control valve on the firewall.
The heat/cold slider is the one that connects to the valve on the firewall.
