1996 Check engine light location

I went to take my 4runner in for inspection and the check guy immediately failed it because he said the check engine light doesn't do its self test when you turn the key on.

I took the 4runner back home and I currently have the instrusment cluster removed. I have pulled every bulb and put a light behind the cluster face I and am not finding any engine symbol or verbiage that says check engine. Did 1996 Toyota 4runners even have a check engine light?

I have found the seatbelt, ABS, oil lamp, battery, airbag, low fuel, AT/P, 4x4 symbol, ECT, RR Diff Lock lamp, bright light lamp, etc but nothing even resembling a engine or check engine warning light.

Anyone know where it is?

Found it. someone put some black tape on it behind everything. Rat bastards!

That's why you ALWAYS check codes when buying a used vehicle, even if the light is off. That trick will NEVER fool an inspector; it only works on unsuspecting buyers.

+100 I always check codes and if the readiness monitors are not all set I usually walk away unless there is a brand new battery. But generally I walk because to me that means the person tried resetting codes right before it went up for sale and EVAP and cat take the longest to set.
