1997 odometer/trip meter counting too slow

Hi, my 1997 analog trip meter and maybe odometer is counting far too slow. about 40% low on distance( shows around 60km for 100km's traveled). However, the speedometer is only off by a few km's, not 40%.

So either the Speedometer isnt directly related to my Odometer/Tripmeter or something is wrong with it.

I am running 265/75/r16 tires which aren't significantly larger than stock.

Anyone have any ideas?

What are you basing 40% low off of? What are you comparing your speedometer against to check how far off it might be?
 
Hi Thanks for the reply. I am using Gaia maps app as a phone GPS reference. Around 100kph on gps the speedometer is only showing about 95 (roughly 5% low).


However, when I travel 100km in distance on Gaia maps the trip meter only goes up about 60km (40% off) .

That doesnt really make sense. Id think that the speedometer would be 40% off too.

Im thinking that there is something wrong with the tripmeter and odometer or where they get a signal from.
 
If I had gotten that type of discrepancy between GaiaGPS (on phone) and the car's odo, I would find an actual physical mileage check, like two intersections that are an exact distance apart. At that rate of difference, a one mile check would provide some information.
 
Sounds suspiciously close to the difference between miles and KM. Is it possible someone did something funny with the instrument cluster at some point? Swapped it for a non-metric US market cluster? Is there a setting which switches them?
 
This started happening on 96Red around 300k mi. Plastic gears drive the analog numbers to roll over after 20 yr their worn n dirty, canned air, lube in the right spot made mine act right for a short time then it started again, live with it or change cluster.

Hmm, Id think that gaia maps wouldnt be that far out. Maybe Ill do a test with google maps.

Hmm, I never thought of that. I sure hope its not swapped.

Hmm....I wonder if it would be an idea to take them fully apart and clean them and then lube with lithium grease or something. Might fix it. Thanks for chiming in with the same problem!

Nah you'd have to be really good to pull that off, Air and DeoxIT D5 worked for 30-40k mi.
Does your ODO or trip meter quit incrementing miles, that's a sign gears are going. Trip meter drives ODO, trip meter off ODO will be also. Yes the speedo is seperate from ODO/trip. JohnMc could be onto something.

As far as I know the odometer is counting up the same as the trip meter but Ill have to do a test. Sorry I havent replied in a long time. I didnt realize there were more questions.
 
Happy new years! Yes I am. I did another test and its pretty close to the difference of KM and Miles. I am now searching for another Metric Cluster.
 
Also, Does anyone know where the signal for the odometer and trip meter comes from? Maybe a wrong or bad sensor? Its not the same as the speed sensor is it?

I believe Signal from speed sensor and comes from our abs system. Can anyone else confirm this?

Depends Analog or Digital ABS or not, a bad or wrong speed sensor will set DTC.
Didn't dig into signal route on 96Red was mechanical failure.
On my 01, 02 will be same signal is routed through ABS/VSC/Trac module using signals from each wheel speed sensor.

I believe 1997 is analog abs as the digital didnt start till 2001 and 2002. When the master cylinder and abs were converged. It's also when VSC and Trac where added in along with digital throttle body and drive by wire throttle.

Called a Bud his 98 is Analog Odo, 99 1st yr of Digital Odo then, do recall 99 I looked at, 01 02 as mentioned.
2k uses 3 brake hoses so still 3 channel ABS, 4 channel started 01.
