1997 Rear Bumper Removal

So, this is a lot more than simply looking underneath the truck. Here's how I did it.

Remove the mud flaps from both sides (there are 10mm, if original) . This will expose a bolt (12mm) on each side.

Pull up the plastic step plate on top of the rear bar. It snaps out. There is one small white clip on each side bumper extension where the plastic step plate snaps into them. Keep those. After you remove the step plate you will expose four bolts on the top of the rear bumper bar.

Remove each of the side extensions. There are four bolts (12mm) holding it in total. The one on the side and three underneath it. On my truck there are two plastic "gasket" things that keep the extensions from touching face bar. Make sure you keep those if you have them.

Underneath the truck you will see four nuts (12mm) holding the face bar to the brackets. Remove those. Then remove the four bolts (12mm) from the top of the face bar. The bumper face bar should slip out easily.

I hope I haven't forgotten anything. I'm sorry that I didn't take photos, but many of my bolts and nuts were rusted and I had to cut them off.

No, I don't think I will. And, I think you miss the point of a forum. A forum is a place where one can gain or share their knowledge. It's not a place just to give half answers because one might know something and then think that everyone else should as well. That's pretty much the definition of ignorance.

And I would think that not even trying to figure it out on your own is ignorant. How did the world ever manage to figure things out before these forums were taken for granted?

It's not a place just to give half answers because one might know something and then think that everyone else should as well. That's pretty much the definition of ignorance.

A forum is also a place for you to use the Search function. As there are plenty of others who have already asked the same question and either A. Gotten the same answer as you got or B. They got the assistance that you were looking for. So that would be the best use of the forum. Search First. Then ask questions later for 1. Clarification, or 2. Help finding said search items if you cannot find them or asking the question as well.

I absolutely used the search function. I could find nothing that explained the step-by-step procedure of removing and/or replacing the rear bumper.

You need a thick skin to survive here. Most are helpful and appreciative but there is a contingent here that revel in making stupid and unhelpful comments or worse, bad and outright dangerous information. Like bypassing the radiator tranny cooler. I have taken my share of slings and arrows.

Thanks for posting your steps, because I have the parts but put off the repair because body parts tend to be a bigger PITA than engine repairs. It looks easier than I anticipated. Do you know the bolt size from the ones you had to replace? Pictures are always helpful, something to keep in mind on your next DIY.

The nuts were 12mm. The bold thread I am unsure of, but it is the same on the top and side bolts and the posts on the face bar.

I tried going to Home Depot, but they were useless. I went to my local dealership and they were able to match them, and gave them to me at no charge.

Definitely... I agree the search sucks... Hence what i posted for the #10 post. Then also the #14 post with the search results that i found by searching... But yet still got blasted for not helping lol... Just saying, the resources were there earlier on in the thread but not sure if OP actually looked at them for the help he was requesting?
