My rear window and wiper are not working. Any ideas where to start looking for a problem? Hopefully its A simple fix

What about your dome light in the trunk? I had problems with mine and it was the pigtail of wires going to the hatch in the upper left corner. I had wires that were broken.

Could also be the MPXB Fuse under the hood. Mine kept popping because of the wires.

^^This. It's one of the more common causes.
 
I tried searching but can't find the location of the mpxb fuse. Can someone help me out

I don't think there is a "one-for-all" fuse that supplies power to the back hatch.

Here's a good site that shows all of the fuses for a 1997: Toyota 4Runner Third Generation (N180) (1996 ? 1997) ? fuse box diagram | Auto Genius

Your best bet and first thing to do would be to disconnect the battery and go inspect the wiring harness that goes from the body to the tailgate. It'll be at the very top, next to one of the tailgate hinges.

Carefully peel back/expose the wires so you can inspect them. If the harness is your issue, you'll likely find some damaged wires there.

'96 to '98 4Runners don't have one.

That makes sense. My bad. But if you don't have one, then definitely check out the pigtail to the hatch as has been said. You may still have to track down a fuse if the wires shorted afterwards, but try the pigtail first

Try popping off the piece of trim underneath the window. The window motor is in there and if yours is like mine, there is a bundle of wires in there that is torn to shreds. You can jump that motor with a spare battery to verify the motor works.
 
silly question, but did you make sure that your back window is rolled all the way up? your wiper, etc... will not work if the window is not fully up.

I'll see if I can get to that this weekend. I also noticed the lock assembly is pushed in and dropped down or just not there.

All the wires look good no dry rotted spots or cracks. I'm leaning toward the control module.
