1999 4runner front bump stops removal

I recently got a sway bar bushing kit from energy suspension and they included some bump stops, so I figured I would throw them on. Any suggestions for getting the old ones off? They are on tight! Do I turn the hex plate under the old stops, or should I be turning the rubber stops themselves? What should I use, a big adjustable wrench?

Don't bother replacing them unless your stock ones are cracked or deteriorating. The poly ones in that kit just start spinning when the bolt separates from the poly. It happened to me and others. If you do want to get them off still though a large pair of channel locks like this help immensely.
