1999 4Runner SR5 V6 - Couple questions

Hello all,

I've been reading the forums periodically since this summer when I bought my 4Runner. There's alot of excellent information on here!

I was wanting to ask a couple questions. I've searched through the forums a bit, but don't see my specific questions answered anywhere.. so I apologize if I just missed it.

1. I've noticed quite a few people mention a locking differential in the 99-02 4Runners. Is this just in the Limited edition? I don't THINK I have an option to lock the rear diff in my SR5. How would I know if I did? Is it a button you push inside, or something that has to be done manually from outside?

2. I see the stock tire size for the 99 4Runner is 265/60 R16. I noticed alot of people saying that you can fit 265/75 R16's and this is what I was thinking of doing. I did notice though that my 4Runner currently has 265/70 R16's on it. Will I notice any difference going from 70's to 75's, or is it too small a change to notice any difference?

1. There would be a button to the lefthand side of the steering wheel that says "RR DIFF LOCK" in orangeish-red. You can't miss it.

2. IMO the upgrade tire size is a pretty noticeable difference, especially if you get a tire size where the actual size is close to 32". The current tires on my truck right now are the 265/70 but they only measure about 29.5-30" tall. So if I went with a Nitto Terra Grappler, which measures about 31.9 I think for the 265/75 size we are looking at nearly a 2" increase. You may experience some slight rubbing with this size, mostly under compression or a full steering lock, but it should be minimal if any.

Diff lock was not avail on 01-02. It was optional on all models for the other years you mentioned not just limited's.

265/70/16 was standard size for the 16" rims not 265/60/16. you can fit 265/75 R16's (32's that are approx 31.6"). I have them on my 99 and with no lift they dont rub. I dont really notice any power loss either. Check my 99 site for pics.

Definitely don't have a big orange button! That's too bad.. there have been a few times so far when I could've used a locked rear diff.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the 265/75 R16's next year. The 70's will get me through this winter and next summer, but I'll have to replace next fall.
