I owned a 1999 4Runner Highlander for 5 years and just bought a 2004 v6 Sport Addition. First 4000 miles on 99 got 19.2 MPG and same for 2004 was 18.74. Part city, more highway to work. 2004 handles MUCH better and rides a whole lot better too. Big difference between the two and the 2004 interior feels so much bigger. Just came back from Cape Hatteras and had both on the beach down there. The 1999 with 20 lbs tire pressure went fine. The 2004 with 20 pounds went ok too until the brakes started to lock and the motor slowed down due to tire slippage. The minute I locked the center differential all of that went away. DON'T go in deep sand without locking the center differential. My son in law thought I was getting stuck as he was behind me in a 2003 Ford F250 turbo diesel 4X4. I really was impressed with the 2004 4Runner. It rides much smoother in the sand than the 1999, but I can't say it went any better. What a vehicle! I can't believe how many 03's and 04 4Runners I saw on the Outer Banks. My son in law ended up pulling out a stuck Wrangler, a Subaru Outback and a Chebby Blazer. Would I buy another 2004 4Runner? In a heartbeat!

now you know why we can't stop talking about these 4th Gens!SD4Runner, are you the one who ran at the drags? Great times for the v6. It is much stronger than the 1999. Was surprised with the sub 16 sec quarter mile times. I only have run 87 octaine in mine. is there any difference with 91 octain? I have a 1984 Monte Carlo SS with a 1987 Buick GN drivetrain I ocassionaly run at the drags. Easy 12.60's @ 107 with street tires and 94 octain. ( the motor is not stock)

Yeah I ran the V6 there. I was running 91 at the time, I don't believe that would have affected the times however. Trust me , we were BOTH happy with a SUB 16 performance. The torque of the v8 really launched the v8 out quick but once the higher speeds came, it was more rpm/horsepower issue and the v6 started to shine. Very happy with the results, can't wait to see more.
On another note, our family used ot own an 87 Buick GN! Funny you mentioned your MC. WE dropped some serious cash into it with Ken Dutweiler(sp?) and had a prototype turbo, dual wastegates, stainles steel brakes, quick shift tranny, etc. we would drive to carlsbad, throw on 29inch slicks and run high 11.9-12.1. Those were the days...what a sleeper! It was awesome. It was my fathers car so I'm not sure of the details of what was modified - in the end my mom took it to go grocery shopping, went to pass and totalled the car spinning on some water from sprinklers on the street......sad.

SD4Runner thanks for the reply. I have about $4,000.00 worth of work done on the GN motor and with slicks and 25 lb of boost with racing fuel it has run a best of 11.01 @ 122 at Norwalk, Ohio. My daughters fiance has a new Z06 Corvette and he ran 12.80's and 12.90's the same day I ran the 12.60's when we ran at Salem, Ohio in April of this year.
