1999 4wd 5 speed build thread

-Rack and pinion (August, 2015)
-Transmission swap (March, 2016)
-New clutch, flywheel, pressure plate (March, 2016)
-Rear Drivers side wheel bearing (May 2016)
-King coilovers and TC UCA's (May, 2016)
-Wheelers braided brake lines (June 3, 2016)
-Repainted undercarriage (June 3, 2016)
-Synthetic oil and filter change (June 3, 2016)






I figured i'd start a build thread since I've finally started doing some mods on the runner.

I bought it in july of 2015 for my commuter when I moved to Arizona, I had a friend buy it for me since I was back home in Hawai'i over summer for $4500 and it looked like this:

It's a 1999 sr5 5 speed with E-locker on 285/75/16. I was pleased with the purchase but the tires rubbed badly due to it not having any lift, I bought a cheap 2.5" Daystar puck lift for the front, and a 3" lift rough country spring for the rear to give me the extra wheel clearance. I also bought a light bar for added horsepower. The lift worked great for what it was, but it still rode pretty stiff and didn't offer the best flex (I flexed out the rear springs a few times) so I saved up for a while and bought Total chaos uca's, King 2.5 coilovers, and Toytec superflex springs. They work great but I'm going to get king resi rear shocks to replace the rough country shocks in the rear.




I went out and did a little flex test to get some measurements.

In the past 2 weeks i've managed to break 2 brake lines, so I installed front and rear braided lines as well as new metal lines into the caliper. I also did a well needed oil change to full synthetic and used a wire wheel to clear off surface rust from the rear axle and frame, then painted over it with a rustoleum "rust preventing" primer and bed liner.

I'm from kona too, I was home for a couple months in march and april and i feel like i saw your rig outside of the offroad shop by costco pretty often. Not sure if it was you though

Oh thats classic haha, I have stopped by there a couple times, but there is plenty of runners over there

Just maintenance related, today I changed my spark plugs and removed my spindles to have a shop press new wheel bearings in

Bought a bumper off a buddy of mine for pretty cheap, it's a Tacoma bumper so i'm going to have to weld a nut to the original mounting plate, but it does the job for now. That's his 99 tacoma shorty, it's Rhino lined and has full armor, pretty cool.

Snapped my spindle 6 miles down a dirt road and no tow truck would get me, but luckily I was able to pull some strings and get it moved to a buddies shop.
Found a new spindle and fender off craigslist for $80 and fixed it in a night.

Holy shit. Yea you did snap it lol. Invest in TC Spindle gusset. It's like $50 a pair.

I just picked up a welder and ordered those gussets actually, hopefully I can get a tank and have them done in a couple weeks.

The previous owner had 285/75/16's on stock suspension and without offset wheels, they rubbed the spindle on the ring that holds the balljoint and wore some of the metal away. I didn't think it was enough to matter, but the outcome says otherwise haha

glad you're ok, and you got it back, that's a chore without replacing on trail.
