Hey everyone,
I'm in a little pickle right now. I have a 1999 4runner with 4wd and want to know what people have done to rebuild the double cardan joint on the rear drive shaft. The one moog sells/makes (285). It fits the rear but not the front of the drive shaft. I don't want to shell out for a new or rebuilt drive shaft it's just too much money at this time. The cardan joint has to be rebuildable right?
Any thoughts or ideas will be greatly appreciated
And I will keep hunting for info in the mean time
Thanks

The DC joint is not re-buildable. A new OEM shaft is stupid expensive so most people get a used shaft from a junk yard or have a custom one built at a driveline shop, (around $400) & then you will have a rebuildable DC in the future.
There's lots of informative threads on this. GL!

K2540

I'm trying to find where to buy the k2540 u joints from. I tried amazon, ebay and googled it no luck. Where does one buy and if they have the clips that go on the outside my cardan has the clips on the inside will it still work?

There is a local shop called Mr.Driveshaft. That’s all they do is driveshafts. They have a website also. And the guy told me the DC can be rebuilt with Koyo U-joints. He can do it. It’s expensive but possible.

I bought a new driveshaft from Wholesale Import Parts this Summer, they build to order. I have a 99 5 speed. Suspension is 99 talls front and 906s rear, ride full gear all the time so driveshaft angle is basically stock. I just blew out the new driveshaft DC joint after only 3 months all with road driving, I literally blew it apart. Their DC joint does not have a grease fitting, they assured me new technology has come far and their DC joint has never had an issue. Knowing my CV joints and ball joints are sealed with over 300K no issues, I said well ok.
Its got a one year warranty so they said they'd swap it out for a new one. I put my old one back in for now till I get the new one. I'll see how the new 2nd replacement lasts. But I'll hunt for a place that can rebuild the old shaft including DC joint. I know I'll use it at one time on another project and I like having a back up with all my heavy use.

I just called Tom woods and left a message. I might go this route if it isn't horribly expensive. The way I look at my situation is I did a lot of things to my truck. From spark plugs all the way to timing belt. Full better then oem suspension rebuild and all my preventative maintenance. And this was one of the last items. So why not splurge and put a nice driveshat on it. All that money I saved by doing things myself I should. But I will let you guys know what news I got for you.

What I would personally do. Is locate a local driveshaft only shop. And have them test it. If the DC is good. Then leave it.

It's apart right now I took it to an automotive shop they said they should be able to get it done but after taking it apart they noticed the bearing cups from the u joints I provided were too big. So I'm getting impatient waiting for a phone call back. And I'm thinking that I need to resort to plan b. Because with 253k on my truck and not knowing if they ever been replaced or for even the matter greased. They are due for replacement but lessened learned every day. Hopefully someone can learn from my mistake of trying haha

$420 of the best money you'll ever spend. And you can save money in the future if you ever have to rebuild with 1310's.

I called up toms today while I had some down time and scramble is right 420 so I got my dementions and I am going to call them back tomorrow and place my order. I just want to drive this damn truck already. So many new parts and it just sits in the driveway. I will let you guys know what goes down.
