1999 Rear Main Seal Oil Leak Replaced Twice

I had the rear main seal replaced about 10 months ago and after about 4 months it started to leak again. The mechanic agreed to replace the seal and at the same time replaced the oil pan gasket.

Got the vehicle home and not 10 minutes after had oil on the driveway again. Back to the shop.

They have put die in the oil and feel that the source is not from up above, and that the oil pan seal is not the issue so we are back to the main seal.

Apparently it does not leak at idle, but once it gets up to 2000 rpm it does seem to start to leak around the bell housing. The suggestion is that it could be that the crankshaft is moving back and forth pushing oil through the seal.

Does this make any sense to anyone? Any other thoughts? Sorry, it is a V6 with about 180,000 miles on it.

There is a fellow member, Brian2sun, who had a leak after replacing his rear main seal. He finally got it fixed. It has been some time, but you may have luck Googling it.

I would make sure that the seal used is Toyota OEM and nothing else. That may be the source of your problem.

Also, make sure your PCV valve is working properly.

Maybe the crank is worn and they need to sleeve it...?
