Some pics about the repair stage and damage found on the gaskets. Notice the middle layer severely corroded. As mentioned before, I always used Prestone green coolant, replaced every year. From now on, just Toyota red coolant for my runner.

Per the rust, are you the original owner? I have seen other autos with bad coolant rust when they may use tap/garden water for the mix when the coolant calls for it.

ok so toyota red coolant only... check. can you fix any damage/corrosion caused from running the green stuff without tearing down the engine?

Same and only owner since I got it at the dealer 12 years ago with 000000 on the odometer! Took me by suprise when I saw all that rust. Believe me, if I had put tap water in it, I would let you guys know, but is not the case.

I don't think rust can be removed or fixed, but stopped. I am no expert on coolant types, etc, but I have read a lot in order try to understand what happened here. Actually if I am not wrong, the manual just calls for ethylene glycol and does not specify anything about rust inhibitors which is a different stuff. Red coolant inhibitors are phosphates while green's are silicates as I have read but there are also mixes and some other types like OAT's which is the orange one... Sometimes is just confusing. In order to avoid this type of event, I am moving back to red coolant, even bought it at a Toyota dealer. Let's see how it goes
