1st edition 3rd gen flares and rock slider FYI

Learning experience, but perhaps it helps others. Have a set of Savage sliders. Talked with Roy today about the flare trimming issue. Pretty sure my Runner is a first print (so to speak). It was purchased in Sept. '96, which most likely means it was the first run of production. These sliders are welded at a 20 degree angle from the frame pipes. Toyota made multiple versions of limited flares throughout the 3rd gen models. What it amounts to is if you want them to fit under the flares and rocker panel covers you need a 5-8 degree angle for early gen trim without some extreme cutting. If you have these flares, be forewarned if you are installing pre-assembled sliders. Here's some pics with some photoshop love. Roy at Savage is helping me get this figured out. I want to make it clear that I have no problem with the product. Quite happy all and all and I like learning -

Thanks for the information and pictures. I will soon be removing my running boards and adding sliders. Did you do any cutting of the flares and repatching them? My flares seem to stick out quite bit and I don't want to fully remove mine. I will probably have the cancer issues as well since I live in the great salt plains just a couple of hours from you. Ever come my way to wheel?

I had this same issue when I got my BAMF sliders on, same with ARKRWLR and Full Throttle. I made a thread about it and it depends on the slider and angle. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/118606-picture-request-limiteds-sliders-no-body-lift.html Mine were set at 20 degrees with no body lift and I would have had to take about 2" off the back flare. It sucks because I had to have mine welded flat, which isn't the end of the world but not what I wanted.

Yup, I had this problem.. My first set of sliders were home made. They were slightly angled and tucked pretty close to the body. I had to notch the flares a little bit, but not much. I've since got BAMF sliders and was the probably the 3rd person overall to get them and the 1st to run them with 35's and limited flares.. A bit of work had to be done to make them fit, including trimming the rear flare attached to the door. Even with a body lift, they aren't as close to the body as I wanted. BAMF sliders for 3rd gens have now been fixed to fit a more wide variety of 3rd gens. Including those with 35's. The original production were too long.

the '99 limited flares don't require as much cutting as far as I understand. Glad ya got them on there with minimal trimming -

The only place I know for wheeling over there is Timber Ridge and you can't drive the trails unless you're a member. I know some folks who have memberships and that only allows for you and your spouse to drive. Your friends can come, but they just have to ride. They do open it up to public once or twice a year and some local clubs organize meets there. No, I didn't do any cutting. I just had all the flares and molding removed, refurbished and painted. I'm not cutting them but that's my choice. If you want to cut yours and re-patch them together, they're gonna have to come off the truck. Not worth all the work in my opinion. Roy fabs his sliders at 20 degrees (see SCRunner12's post), this is optimum, but causes these flare issues. there's only 2 options. Cut your flares as needed -or-order sliders that you assemble yourself. Roy is working with me on my issue and I'm very appreciative of that. As far as the slat plains, i don't care what you do, stuffs gonna rust. A POR treatment would help, but it's expensive, messy and a lot of work. Mines not in as bad of shape as a i would have thought for a 17 yr old vehicle that been in Omaha it's whole life. Just wash it a lot in the winter -

The one that would be closer to you is 12 miles south of Knoxville. About 300 acres of trails that stock to extreme rigs can wheel. The club that calls it there land is miobi.org. I used to organize a Toyota event. (2006-2008 I think) The other place in SE Iowa is extreme and you wouldn't want to take your 3rd gen 4Runner there. I have pictures from both places. Hey thanks for the info, man. If you're heading down to this place by Knoxville, let me know. I'll PM ya for pics. If you're getting the 4x sliders, the flares are no concern, just weld them at the angle you want. The only concern I had with them is the gussets provided. They're pretty small -

Roy is one of my closest friends, let me get that out of the way first. I have limited flares with the flange and also a one inch body lift. My sliders just sit a 1/4 of and inch below the flange. I dont see the big deal. He did not have to modify my angles or customize anything. You don't want to have the slider touch the rocker panels anyways due to flex when wheelin'...

That's pretty cool. I got my first welding lesson last weekend with the panhard bar drop bracket. It's very similar to doing a built outline with tattooing. I'm excited to try it on some scrap metal at my friends' sign shop. That post with Steve at Roughneck's shop with the CNC machine was really cool. I have to be careful, though - between Game of Thrones, Deadliest Crabs, 4Runners, Breaking Bad and golf I have enough hobbies. I Have a lot of respect for you fabricating folks' -
