1st Gen Gear Oil?

I have a 1989 Toyota 4runner SR5 V6 4X4.

My question is will Valvoline 75W-90 Full Synthetic Gear Oil work in my Manual Transmission, Transfer Case, and both Differentials?

On the bottle it says:
Differential: API Service GL-4, GL-5
All Manual Transmissions: API Service GL-5, MT-1

Some folks use a GL5 with no trouble, I couldn't. GL5 is supposed to be backwards compatible with GL4, but there's something in it that doesn't play well with our synchros. I tried a couple top shelf different brands and didn't get rid of the hard shifts until I switched to a GL4 specific oil. Redline MT90 in my case, but Royal Purple and Amsoil also make a GL4 synthetic that works great in the W56.

Most of my truck gets whatever is cheap, but the transmission gets nothing but MT90.

Thank you. what about the Transfer Case, and both Differentials? Is the 75W-90 ok?
 
oils have came a long way from the time out 4runners were made. i use GM synchromesh in the trans. smooth shifts even with my burnd out clutch. but only use it in the trans. its hard to find, probably not in stores.

Yup, 75w90, 80w90, GL4 or GL5, whatever you can find is fine. Lots of the stuff you'll find will have a limited slip additive, that's fine too, it won't hurt anything.
 
Im rebuilding/replacing my front axle this weekend.. And also planned on changing the oil in both diffs and transfer case. While searching, I came across this thread.

So I picked up some purple synthetic 75W140 for the diffs.

Started searching some more and all I see is redline, redline, redline.. Should I return this stuff?

Id really like to be completely done with this project within the next couple of days... So if I should go with something different, is this something that will just have to be ordered online?

Is there a "just as good" substitute that could be bought locally?

Im not a mechanic or an oil expert, so please spell it out for me.

Lots of guys run 75w140 in the diffs, they think it makes them run quieter. I think you got probably 250k running the 75w90 the engineers spec'd for it and why mess with a good thing? 75w140 will work, but if you're concerned about it, 75w90 is what the diff was designed to run. The tcase is like the diff, it's spec'd for 75w90 but it's not picky, it'll take anything in that range.

The transmission is where you need to be specific - stuff that says GL4/GL5 will generally lead to nasty shifting. You're looking for a GL4 specific gear oil. If you want to use the same stuff in the trans, tcase, and both diffs, and you want it to be the right oil weight, just get a grip of Redline MT90 and run with it.

That definitely clears up some confussion. For some reason I thought I read GL4 in the transfer case, vise transmission. (Long day)

I think I'll exchange the 75w140 for the 75/80w90... And just use that in everything, except the trans.
