1st Gen rear tire swing

ive been wanting to add a spare tire mount to my rear so it swings out but i dont think i will be able to, i had to sell my welder and a bunch of other tools.... i saw this and had a wonderful idea! is it a good idea to mount a spare tire on the body like this? he used a isuzu rodeo tire swing out and it was like 15 bucks at a scrap yard. i have a 33x12.5x15 and i didnt know if this would eld up being to much weight and tear out......

anyone esle know of any bolt on ideas that would give me the same end result? anyone think this is really dumb? i want some honest opinions because im considering this

Would a swing out tire carrier off of a 2nd gen 4Runner work?

I had a 37 inch spare on a factory mounted swing out tire carrier and never had an issue with it.

That's some heavy weight on a cantilever-type set-up. I can't imagine that holding up well without some serious reinforcements concerning the mounts. What are those mounts bolted into? Sheet metal?

Well if it's factory on your truck it's not just bolted to sheet metal. They make it strong enough for a tire. But to make it work on another truck you would need to do some plating. I really don't think it's worth the time. You could make a rear bumper with a swing out or swing down tire carrier.

all kinds of people make that the one but you cant open your tailgate with that style
im making has a swing, highjack, and a adapter to tow a trailer.
i have even thought of a swing swivel with a small work bench that when you swing it out it the bench unfolds with it.
will update next week, look for the install guide ill be showing a full how too weld by weld.

im thinkin the hitch might be the better way to go. im gonna see if i can get ahold of a welder now.... im gonna upload my blue prints soon, mine has a hing that will drop it to the ground so i can drop the tail gate and have a lock so it can stay down if the tailgate stays down. if that makes any sence. pics soon

I'll make, or at least design and bribe someone into fabricating, a swinging spare tire mount that fits the custom bumper I had made:

For rigidity, it may have to use the receivers on both ends of the bumper, but the entire swing would be removable. I've seen some on the back of Jeeps I'd be tempting to adapt if I could get one cheap.

this is somthing like what im gonna make but instead of mounting it to the bumper i will make it go into my receiver. that way i can still pull my small trailor off of that to.

well that's always a option but we are discussing swing racks not drop racks the swing is nice for older people or disabled people because you don't have to bend over and lift the weight of the rack and tire, with a swing its easy to place it and move it.

i understand i started the swing thing but that was just kind of a question about like an isuzu rodeo or honda passport spare tire swing. no one thought that was a good idea so then the hitch option came up. i guess now after thinking about it this is a better idea, kinda fail safe and i dont have to drill into my body. idk sorry for changing subjects but its just another random idea i had today

by all means its cool to change topic, the idea that bolting into the body was shot down do to the lack of support on the qaurter panel.

the hitch is (in my opinion) the best option for holding the weight and being functional.
