I just picked up an 87 runner totally stock. I would like to put 31's on the stock Toyota wheels. Will I have clearance issues and would I need to add a body or suspension lift?
Thanks

I am in no way an expert.
On my 87 I did whats called the zuk mod, thats adding coil springs to the rear end I got about 3 inches out of that. Others ill tell you ad a leaf, new leafs longer shackles.....
The front you may look into ball joint spacers and/or turning the torsion bars.
here is a link to the zuk mod info, scroll to the bottom left.

A first-gen without the rear sag, should already accept 31's without any clearance issue.

If there is rear sag, like what MacGyver1979 said ^^. Also search Old Man Emu if you want a properly-engineered mild lift.

Also search Zuk mods for various springs to use.

Check out the stickies at the top of the Classics section. Lots of information there. Even one called the Classics lift and tire thread...

Welcome to the forum!

it should be able to run 33's with only minor fender trimming. 31's should be easy.

in fact, weren't 31's a factory option?

I do not believe 31s were a factory option

I had the rear end sag, so I tore apart my leaf pack, added 2 leaves that I cut down from a donor pack, and put it all back together. Rides firm and controlled, and still flexes well. The rear now sits just a bit higher than the front.

My front suspension is stock and fits 31x10.5x15 on factory wheels no problem.

i dont know when toyota offered the 31 10.5 as an option...... but my 89 4x4 pu had them as a factory option. (had the original paperwork that showed it.)

here is my 89 4runer

had 31's on factory wheels, but the 6" wheel is too narrow & causes the tread to pucker in the middle. (7" is the min)

had 31's on factory wheels, but the 5.5 wheel is too narrow & causes the tread to pucker in the middle. (7" is the min)

What was the factory gear ratio?

i dont remember what gear ratio the pu had. (sold it about 6 years ago)

just asked my dad (he owned it for about 6 months & it was his friends from day one.) he said he remembers it being 4.56

mine was a v6 5 speed

per local toyota dealer tec.
Most Toyotas in the US have 4.10 axle gearing.
Four cylinder with auto trannies have 4.30 gearing, 4.87 if they came factory with 31" tires
All V6's & 4-cylinder with manual trannies had 4.56 gears if they came factory 31" tires
(pre-tacoma info. I didnt ask about them)

Good connection to have. I'm glad you said the gearing with the 31's was 4.56 from the factory which is what I calculated needing to make the jump from the stock 28" tires. Now its time to calculate the cost of 4 BFG A/T's front & rear Ring & Pinions, install kits and the locker. Not a cheap upgrade.
Thanks for your help

id like to do the gears on my 89 runner.... it has 4.10 but 31" tires. I can notice a lack of power on take off.
When I can afford to, I want to do lock right lockers @ the same time... need the OME lift as well. (bunch of other little things, but they all add up!)
Still a ton of $ to spend getting this thing where I want it to be.

1.5 bj spacers, SAW torsion bars up front and zuk tj coils and add a leaf for the rear. Tires are 33x12.5x15 pro comps. Little more lift then I wanted in the rear. Ended up being 6in total with tire size increase.
