1st night sleeping in the rig last night. What I learned

Had an overnight with the scout troop last night. Knew I’d sleep in the T4R so I took out the rear bottoms and brought the air bed. It was going to be a low of 50 so no sleeping bag needed, just a few blankets.

I’d like a sleeping platform but if I make one, I’d be sleeping on a foam pad. I’m 6’0 and need headroom. I don’t think I could handle the cramped quarters of a sleeping platform AND an air bed. I’d love the extra width provided by a platform.

I need something to pee in. I had a Jersey Mike’s Italian sub on the way, in case the scouts made a horrible dinner (that didn’t so I had that and a burger) and it made me really thirsty. I drank about a quart and a half of water after dinner and ended up peeing three times during the night. Getting in and out was a chore. Need a bed bottle if I do that again.

Made some plastic screens to cover the open windows, to keep out insects and have a breeze. Loved them! Held in place with magnets. Only had enough screen to make screens for the two rears and the sunroof (never rains here). Later I’ll make some for the fronts and the rear.

They make sunscreens for your doors that just slide down over them like a sock, that would work great for bug/breeze window action, then you could use less magnets and less fuel

I have yet to do a night in the 4runner so this is good to learn from. Cool idea with the magnets! You could take it a step further and stitch a soft edging material around the screens with magnets embedded into to. Less scratching and you could just pop them on easily.

That's exactly what I do. Great minds think alike I guess. I use some very strong rare earth magnets which can be a pain to get off so next time I come across a wrecked umbrella I'm going to cut out little pieces of it and put them under the magnets. Then I just grab the little piece of umbrella fabric and pull it off.

Agreed. One person, at a slight angle is doable. Which is fine, because if my wife comes along we will probably take the pop up camper anyway.

CAN THE BROTHER GET AN AMEN???!!!! And at an angle does not help!! I just leave the back door up and get air/length that way. If it's bug season (ours is short) then I bring a tent.

If your over 6’ there is a solution

Remove rear set bottoms and push the front passenger seat forward.
Place pad or insulated camping air core of your choice down.
Small yeti or action packer sits perfect in the rear seat foot well to level it out

Prett sure if you can weld you can make these but if not just get them to make the rear seat bottoms easy to remove.

Had a friend with 5 sons that did this exact thing in the back of his old Dodge Van, for road trips. Roll the carpet back and have at her boys. They used to time it so that there was always someone behind them too. Nasty.

For folks that don't have access to a welder, Ace is the place has what you need in aluminium or plastic knobs with stud and plastic or metal spacers can put them together under $10 each mine have worked for me 8 yr or so.

Never took pictures, Totaled Feb 7 never saw it again.
Same size as bolt holding it now don't remember.
