Castrol GTX 5W-30. I'll switch over to AMSOil after 10k.
05 V8, 6.5 qts. of oil!

Hoomiester said:I'll second that! I almost had to destroy the original to get it off. Get them to at least loosen it for you before you change the first one yourself!
sauria said:That bad, eh? I have an oil filter wrench like the one that Ian used to finally loosen the filter in his excellent tutorial on an '04.

carina71 said:Careful Bluto, Amsoil synthetic (an extremely excellent product) is not certified and may void your warranty! You might want to consider Redline instead. However, Mobil 1 is a close third, and much less expensive than the other two--Just a heads up:
Bluto said:It looks like Toyota requires a API SJ grade certified motor oil?
AMSOil XL-7500 is certified SJ. http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/xlf.aspx
My warranty would be OK running XL. But not the ASL. I don't think it has been certifed SJ due to the cost.
I won't void my warranty, but I may be denied oil related engine repair. What kind of warranty problems could I have in 60k? It is a Toyota.: Long term, +100k miles, who knows. What is the difference between SJ and SL/CF?
I have 2.5 gallons of the ASL from my last vehicle. My brother has been using it in his Tundra with no problems. I may use Redline. I hate Mobil 1. Oil analysis on my last car showed Mobil 1 had 3x the wear of AMS (in a Acura). Also, Mobil 1 seems to change their formula a lot.
Wix makes a great filter at a good price. I did not know Wix filters were the same as TRD. They do well in the tests I've seen. Their construction and parts are superior. AMS filters are probably the best filter, but not cheap. I think somone on this site cut up a bunch of filters, but I can not find the link.
carina71 said:That's it, go for it. Don't let anyone here talk you into taking it to the dealer. Consider it a right of passage! So, you too can say, "Yup, next time I'll let the dealer take the first one off." :bonk: Post a picture of the filter once it is off. And welcome to the club of the stubbornly determined![]()
Koz said:Amsoil (synthetic) is the BEST motor oil on the planet period. Mobile 1 is a very close second. For the manufacture to void your warrantee they would have to prove the oil caused the failure. This is not going to happen! The only (oil related) voided warrantee I have ever heard of was Pennzoil (petroleum based) which at one time caused sludging.
Do yourself a favor, if you are not using full synthetic motor oil (any brand) make the change. The least effective Synthetic oil is far superior to ANY petroleum oils. Every single aspect of synthetic oil is FAR better then petroleum based oil. It is probably the one most effective protection you can provide for your engine. Did you know that the VVTi engines use the motor oil to vary the cam timing. It is the life blood of your car, USE THE BEST! (Any full synthetic).
