2.4 Turbo

Ok, so I've done some searching, and I'm not quite finding what I'm looking for... Does anyone have any thoughts on putting a turbo in a 89 2.4L 4Runner? I'm just wanting a little more "get-up and go" than it currently has.

Does anyone know of any write-ups on this? Thanks guys! Y'all are always so helpful.

It's not much better then a regular 22re. It was a option in the 4Runner and my buddy has a turbo truck and it's not much better honestly.

It was an option for the '86-'87 model year 4runners and the only transmission you could get was the automatic. The trucks got turbos too, but they, for some reason, got an optional 5 speed.
Power output was about the same as the 3.0 V6, which was the turbo's replacement for the '88 model year.

Turbos are not worth the trouble IMO.

In my opinion the trouble it would be to add a turbo would not be worth it unless your 4Runner is a 5 speed manual. The 1st gen automatics rob so much power, you would hardly notice the difference unless you tried to do a full build and make some real power, and then the automatic might not hold up well anyway.

You have better options for a swap that are cheaper and easier to come by.

Would you mind telling me some of those options? I'm pretty new to all this stuff, so I'm trying to figure everything out! Right now it's stock, rebuilt 22-RE, manual trans.

Ok, so I have the manual transmission, do you have knowledge on putting turbos in, or a link to a write up about it? Thanks!

Since you have a manual, that is a plus. I don't have any specific info on the turbo upgrade, as my 87 is a factory 22RTE turbo. There still may be easier/better swaps available, I'm sure others will chime in.

LCE Performance sell turbo kits like this Pro Turbo Kit High Boost 22RE Non Turbo Block Only. But you still need other things like a 22RTE pcm and injectors.

Ignore the 22re turbo you will spend thousands and get minimal performance.

List of swapped engines that have been done with success.

Toyota engines
5vze 3.4L from 96-04 tacoma and 4Runner.

7mge and 7mgte supra engines.

3rze 4cyl from 96-04 Toyota 4Runner and Tacoma.

Chevy 4.3 5.0 5.3 5.7 6.0 7.2
Ford 5.0 5.4, 7.3 diesel

Dodge 4bt and 6bt diesel

Vw 1.9 and 2.0 diesel my favorite.

I have heard of others but that list is the most common. Diesel is the best way to go because of oodles of torque and great gas mileage. I'm doing a VW turbo diesel swap right now find by build thread and keep up with it I explain most reasoning of why diesel is better.

Turbo Diesel

I have 94 4runner with original 2.4 Turbo Diesel with Auto Tranny.. working like a champ.. this engine comes in the Japanese models.

If I could, I would have put that diesel motor in my '96...Emission standards in Cali would have made it a Nightmare!!

Went with the 3RZ rebuild.
