2.7L 4cyl VS 3.0 6cyl 4x4

yes the 3.4 is faster. but not by as much as everyone thinks. i owned a 2.7 and now i have the 3.4 and there isn't a huge difference. a 2.7 with a exhaust, deckplate, and ISR brings it about even to the 3.4. the 3.4 also weighs more

Lets put it this way
3.4l is a turtle, and a gas hog. I drive hard, so 210-220 miles on a tank is about average for me :uzi:
It has 183 hp, max horsepower, torque: 217 ft-lb
We're pushing maybe 150 hp to the wheels,and 180 ft-lb
This means the 3.0 is a slug, and the 2.7 ain't much better (its lighter and has about the same power)
For the 2.7, Output is 150 hp with 177 ft-lb
Thats pushing ,aybe 120 to the wheels and 150 ft-lb.

All in all don't waste your time on anything but the 3.4

Just FYI, my 2.7 and 4.56 gearing, the way it is now, has beaten all of the stock NA 5VZ's I've ever dueled up against. (lol 4Runner drag!) :boxer:

The 2.7 is definitely more bulletproof. I'm not saying that my 4Runner is a speed machine, it can't beat much, but it's not as ungodly as the 3.0

OH, and I still get 17.8 mpg average with 300 miles per tank (and believe me, I am no grandma driver)

I love the 3.4... I've had two 3rd gens with the 3.4, and they've both been bullet proof, and gotten 20 mpg average with mixed city/hwy driving, with more than acceptable power. And I also don't drive like gramdma. I also had an '89 Runner with the 3.0, and it was actually very reliable up until around 290k miles. It still ran, but just had no power. I plan on being a 3rd gen owner with the 3.4 for as long as they are available.

The 4.0 V6 kicks both of these engines out of the water, power, mileage, and they're so far very reliable.

Not sure why you quoted me on this post. I've never driven a 2.7 and don't know anything about it. I'm sure the 2.7 is a great engine, I just love the 3.4. No "personal beef", just relating my experience as requested by the OP. If you're referring to my "grandma" comment, I was simply making the point that I also have a lead foot, but still get good gas mileage with the 3.4...even better than some seem to get with the 2.7.

I've had two of them back in the day (one pickup, one 4Runner) and they suck. Not just gas. ;-)

Just bought a 96 4runner 2.7l 4wd and today took it out to the mud trails, and it had no trouble what so ever keeping up with my friends lifted inline 6 land cruiser. The h4 and l4 worked perfectly. Never got stuck.

I've had my 2.7l 4runner for about 2 months now, i just wanna say i love it to death the 4cyl is bullet proof, to it out mudding and never tried to die on me, power is enough to peel out whenever i feel like doing it. Right now i am looking to buy a lift for it maybe a 3'' or 4''.

I was going to let this thread die but because it is on top again-

I bought a 3rz because of stuff I read about them and some of it was possibly from here.

The cast iron headers crack. They are covered up and hard to see.

IF the valves don't get adjusted, there are going to be head/valve problems. It isn't an engine where you just change the oil and keep going for 300k, imo.

I've owned everything from the 2.4 in an '87 pickup and 4Runner to three 3.0L's in a pickup and two 4Runners my kids owned. I've never owned a 2.7L and have no experience with them.

The 2.4L is a great motor and will run forever taken care of, but they really have to work pushing a 4Runner and you will not win any drag races unless you are racing a Yugo. But, as I said, they will run forever. They are a little more liveable in the lighter pickup, but still slow as molasses.

The 3.0L is a POS. I am sure Toyota wishes they could undo that motor from their history books. They are underpowered, had major problems with warped heads and sucked gas like there was no tomorrow.

I would never, ever buy a 3.0L or advise anyone to.

The 3.4L is what the 3.0L should have been IMO.

They are not slow (by SUV standards) and will run forever if taken care of.

I've got 104K on my 2002 now, it burns 1/2 quart in 4K miles and still runs like stink if I want it to. I will own this 4Runner until the wheels fall off.

2.7 for sure. 3.0 is junk, and has no power.

even compared to the 3.4, once you start modding the 2.7 you end up overtaking the 3.4 in the numbers game pretty quickly.
