Excellent! Good for you showin up the stealer. I went to a local lock Smith to have my key cut I think he charged $8.

ha, I went to a local locksmith to cut 2 spare keys for mine, and they wanted like $125, or something stupid like that after having been turned down at Home Depot, Ace, etc. (and that was just to cut them, with no programming!)Finally stopped at a locksmith a few towns away where I was doing a job, and they only charged $2 per key! Only problem was that I was only able to program 1 of them, which is why I haven't bought the switchblade key yet, since I think the memory has reached the max number of keys and needs to be cleared at this point. Once I get around to that, I'll grab a switchblade key and have that other locksmith cut it for $2.

Yeah, the other (expensive smith), I had been going to for years, and my work has an account with them! They always give me crap though if I had the nerve to just get a couple of keys cut and use the company charge for one of our properties.:bash: After giving me that rate just to cut a couple of keys, I told them to screw off, and said I’d never step foot in there again. Someone put a link that had clearing instructions on the previous page, but I haven’t had time to try it yet. I suspect that the previous owner may have used some of the slots, but when I got the truck, the dealer only had 1 key, so I definitely needed to make some! For all I know, one of the spares I bought had a defective chip, or something, but I didn’t want to risk the money on a switchblade key if it wouldn’t work to start the truck.

Finally programmed the key fob after having it in my possession for 3 months...lol. Weird part during programming was that it remote started the car. Really weird.

Now to go find a locksmith to cut the actual key...

It was during the programming sequence. It was the third time I was holding down the lock / unlock buttons simultaneously that caused it to start. I couldn’t disengage the engine until I touched the brake pedal. Key in or out didn’t matter and opening the door didn’t matter either. It was really odd.

Finally got to cutting ($10) and then programming it using an old YouTube video from 6 years ago. I’ll post the video I used for the fob to see if anyone can replicate what happened to me.

So I went to the dealer here in Tallahassee. Most unhelpful Toyota dealer I have ever been to. Most dealers have been great to work with. This place was quite quick to shut EVERYTHING I suggested down and to boot, I was told information that was factually incorrect. "Thats key has been programmed before", Nothing will work except the specified 4Runner fob on my computer screen", "You have to hook it up to the computer", etc. What a joke that place was.

In summary, the dealer said that there is nothing that they can do. I guess I will be return the keys I bought and trying another seller.

The Tallahassee dealer has to be the worst I have ever seen. I willnot do business with them at all, although I have bought 3 new vehicles from them. If I have to use a dealer, I drive to Thomasville, GA.

I am not planning on staying in Tallahassee any longer than me and my fiancé have to, but a new 4runner is in my future in the next few years and I will NOT be purchasing one from there. That place left a real bad taste in my mouth. I don't think I will go back to them for anything, period.

Yes my 4Runner is an 03 limited, I bought a switch blade key had it cut, I programmed the key and remote too it.

Just go to a locksmith if you could. They won't charge an arm or a leg to cut a key like the stealerships. I had mine cut for like $10.

Did your locksmith need to disassemble the key to cut it, or was he able to do it with the body still attached? I thought I read something earlier in the thread where someone had to take it apart to have it cut.

Got it cut by a locksmith, programmed it to unlock, lock, and roll glass down myself. With provided instructions....

You will need the dealer, or someone with a OBD2 computer to register the key to your 4R's computer before it will start the truck though.

I have a friend at Toyota that did the registering part for me. I will ask him what his dealership would charge to do it.

How to program

Actually it's a super easy if you still have one master key that can start your 4runner. There was a pdf somewhere about how to do it on a Prado but
its not very clear(it would ask you to remove the key from ignition 3 times without mentioning putting it back in at all) so I'll try to provide a clearer one here:

1. Take the new key and one master key that can start your 4runner(old key) into the 4runner with you and close the driver's door.(immobilizer light should be blinking)

2. Insert old key, remove old key, Insert old key, remove old key,
Insert old key, remove old key, Insert old key, remove old key,
Insert old key (immobilizer light should be off from the first insertion)

3. open and close driver's door six times (immobilizer light should be off)
Step 2 and 3 need to be done in less than 35 seconds(pdf says 35 seconds)

4.remove the old key. (immobilizer light should come on(steady on, not blinking))

5. insert the new key(immobilizer light should be blinking)

Then just sit there and wait, after about one minute the blinking immobilizer light should go off and you're done.

Whole process need to be repeated for any additional keys, the just programmed key could be used as the "old key" for the additional keys.

If there are 5 master keys registered with the immobilizer, it won't accept any more(and I don't know how would it tell you this, so just do a erase if you can't get it to work after trying for a few times). You have to erase them using a similar method(bring in just an old key, insert+remove one more time and open+close one more time, after the 7th close of the driver's door the immobilizer light will stay lighted for one second, remove the old key quickly after that and all but that one you just removed are erased.)

If you don't have any working master key(meaning you only have valet keys). Then I've no idea what could you do other than ask for help from a dealership.

Total cost is less than $25 if you still have at least 1 working master key. Less than 1/5 of what my local dealership wants.

Hope this would be useful for those in need, please post your results if you decided to give this a try.

Did your locksmith need to disassemble the key to cut it, or was he able to do it with the body still attached? I thought I read something earlier in the thread where someone had to take it apart to have it cut.

Mine did it with the key attached but it seemed like they had problems initially. They ended up figuring it out after the master locksmith came out lol.

And this is the procedure for the remote

1. Driver's door open, key removed from ignition switch.

Within 5 seconds:

2. Insert and remove the key from the ignition switch twice.

Within 40 seconds:

3.Close and open driver's door twice.

Insert and remove the key from the ignition switch.

Within 40 seconds:
4.Close and open driver's door twice.
5. Insert the key into the ignition switch and close the driver's door.
6. Switch ignition ON and OFF once to program a remote transmitter code while retaining the original codes or twice to program a remote transmitter code whilst erasing the original codes. Three times to check how many remote transmitters are currently registered or five times to erase all registered codes.

7.Remove key from ignition switch:

System should now lock and unlock vehicle once, twice or five times
depending which mode has been selected. One to four times, slowly, to
indicate number of remote transmitters registered.

Within 40 seconds:
8.Press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for 1.5 seconds

Within 3 seconds:
9.Press LOCK button.

System should now lock and unlock vehicle once to confirm registration,
twice to indicate registration has failed.

Within 40 seconds:
10.Repeat button procedure to program remaining remote transmitters.

SIDE NOTE: To exit programming mode: Open driver's door.

SIDE NOTE: A maximum of 4 remote transmitters can be programmed.
