2-way radio interference?

Lost-Again

New member
So.... I finally got around to reading the owners manual for my 2018 5thGen. There is a cautionary statement saying that using a 2-way could cause everything from the electronics to the SRS system and beyond to malfunction!?!?

Well..... I have a 2m/70cm and cb radio I plan to install.

Has anyone’s 5thGen exploded from using such radios?

I'm part of a 2 meter repeater group with daily tech discussions and there has been no mention of car electronics having a problem.

One guy keyed up his transmitter in his garage and scrambled his garage door opener. Had to reprogram it, no damage.

Nope! Yeasu 7900r which I plan to mount in the rear somewhere. I have an old cobra something but plan to upgrade to a 75WX.

:mmph: Take it easy on Baofeng, I started with one, good cheap way to jump in.

I was only kidding. I got my start with a BF that served me well until I dropped it too many times (I had a tall antenna on it that made it super unstable when you set it down) and it went deaf on 2m. I do plan to buy a replacement at some point for a project I want to do but got an FT-65 as my go everywhere HT.

For the record I have an FTM-400 in my 2011. The only thing I would be careful of is not mounting the ham antenna too close the the FM antenna (mine's just on the other side of the hood).

I have multiple radios in my truck and don't see any vehical related issues or malfunctions.

Me too, I did not intend to sound defensive.

Oh you didn't. I just wanted to point out that I was kidding. I think the little BFs are terrific value for the money and I really like them. But there are a lot of hams that think they'll result in the end of the world.

Also wanted to comment that I haven't seen anything crazy while using my radios in the 4runner. I have a 50watt Kenwood Tmv71a and several Baofeng units that'll use every so often in the truck.

About the only negative effect I can really say I've experienced is when transmitting the HD radio signal will occasionally go out. Not a real big deal to me since I'm usually just streaming stuff over Bluetooth via my phone.

Just make sure all your equipment is grounded properly and you'll be fine.

I've got a tyt th-7800 dual band in mine. I have not had any issues on high power. Directly wired to the battery, antenna is mounted on the side of the hood with a trunk mount bracket.

baofeng 5ur.

car 1, car 2, car 3. car 1 can hear all cars but car 3 cannot hear car 1.
car 3, car 1, car 2. car 1 can hear all cars and car 3 can hear car 1.
car 1 and 3 switch radios and car

We trade radios and car 1 can hear car 3 but car 3 cannot hear car 1.

we seem to think some interfence in car 3.

Those cheap radios have interference issues that are inconsistent with each other, to some degree. One radio may have issues at certain frequencies, which are different frequencies that might affect another Baefeng radio.

Are you sure someone has not inadvertently enabled Tone Squelch on either the send or receive stage on one of the radios?

I would make sure the stations are correctly setup before blaming it on interference.

tried different sql settings. same problem.
tried different stations, same problem.

we were on a caravan for 1000 miles and this made it quite interesting.

Well squelch and tone squelch are two different things...

squelch level determines how strong/weak of a signal is allowed to break squelch.

Tone squelch required a tone to be present in order to break squelch. This could easily cause a 1 way communication issue.

Are these radios you programmed, or are you trying to use the default stations loaded onto the radios that were used for testing?

2015 Trail with FTM-400 mounted under the seat and a lip mount on the hood. No issues, even at 50watt and using digital modes.

It's pretty rare to have interference issues with modern vehicles and modern two way radio equipment, but I think most car owner's manuals have a similar disclaimer.

If anything, you may experience interference on the RADIOS from the car's electrical system - my wife had a Prius before she upped her game and she could not use a handheld 2M in the car without the radio constantly hissing static at her on standby, even with squelch at max. Move away from the car, no problem.

Very possible… my mobile 2m rig actually opens squelch when the compressor of the ARB fridge is running because I ran the antenna and the fridge power cables parallel to each other. It became rather annoying, but it didn’t stop successful transmit or receive operations when TX/RX with another station. Being lazy I initially fixed the issue by adding TSQL to some of my simplex channels but ultimately re-routed cables.

I think it’s fair to say it depends on the radio as well… My Yaesu VX-7R has a much better receiver than my Baofeng. Not only does it have even better sensitivity, it has excellent selectivity which is even more important. Sensitivity is the ability to hear, but selectivity is the ability to focus and hear the message in the room full of noise, even if the message itself is weak.

The Baofeng receiver has pretty good sensitivity, but its selectivity isn't very good which makes it harder to use in high RF environments.

New Yaesu Ham Radio

I just purchased the Yaesu FT-70D R/E hand held Ham radio from Ham Radio Outlet. Better prices than Amazon by about 10% and I walked into the Burbank, CA store to buy it.

I'm studying for the Ham Radio license. The exam is coming up in a few days. Hopefully I'll pass it the first time. I studied basic electronics during my Civil Engineering degree program so some of it is familiar.

I avoided buying the Baofeng based on advice from one of the electrical engineers here at work who owns more than a few Ham radios. We're building microwave towers and RF antennae for public service channels (linking emergency services) so my friend knows this stuff. The Baofeng are also made in China and not worth fixing when they break, IMO.

Edit: Most products I see from China, like the Harbor Freight tools, can't be fixed even if you could get the parts, which you can't. Have you ever tried to order parts for anything made in China? It's all cheap stuff that has lowered the bar on quality for everything they make.
